2006 World University Cycling Championship – Women's Time Trial
The Women's U23 road race at the 2006 World University Cycling Championship took place on 23 March 2006. The Championships were hosted by the Belgian city of Antwerp. The race consisted of 2 laps on a 6.8 km long circuit (13.4 km). In the race participated 23 athletes from 13 countries representing 3 continents. The Dutch women's Loes Gunnewijk and Ellen van Dijk won gold and silver in the time trial leaving the silver to Verena Jooss from Germany. Loes Gunnewijk
Loes Gunnewijk (born 27 November 1980 in Groenlo) is a Dutch former professional racing cyclist, who rode professionally between 2004 and 2015. Gunnewijk was a member of the Dutch national team together with Ellen van Dijk, Marianne Vos and Annemiek van Vleuten in the road race at the 2012 Summer Olympics where Vos won the gold medal. Gunnewijk announced her retirement from the sport in May 2015, subsequently completing the Union Cycliste Internationale's Sports Directors Diploma course in November 2015. Between May and the end of 2016, Gunnewijk joined her old cycling team as a trainee directeur sportif. Since 2017, Gunnewijk has been the head junior women's coach and assistant para-cycling coach for the Dutch cycling national federation Royal Dutch Cycling Union, KNWU. World University Cycling Championships
The World University Cycling Championship is a competition sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which was first held in 1978 in Antwerp, Belgium. Before 1978 there were also World University Championships, but these were not sponsored by the International University Sports Federation. The latest edition was held in San Carlos, Costa Rica during 2024. The championship last five days and could contain events in five cycling sports: road cycling (road race and time trial), track cycling, mountainbike (cross-country and marathon), BMX and Cyclo-Cross. The Women's U23 road race at the 2006 World University Cycling Championship took place on 25 March 2006. The Championships were hosted by the Belgian city of Antwerp. The road race consisted of 13 laps on a 6.8 km long circuit (88.4 km). In the race participated 33 athletes from 12 countries representing 3 continents. Two days after winning silver in the 2006 World University Cycling Championship – Women's time trial, time trial, the Dutchwomen Ellen van Dijk won gold in the road race leaving the silver to Eva Lutz from Germany and the bronze to Ludivine Henrion from the host country Belgium.
