The 2006 Tour of the Basque Country was the 46th Tour of the Basque Country road cycling race and was held over six stages from 3 April to 8 April 2006. It was won by Spaniard José Ángel Gómez Marchante of the cycling team. José Ángel Gómez Marchante
José Ángel Gómez Marchante (born 30 May 1980 in San Sebastián de los Reyes, Madrid) is a Spanish former road bicycle racer, who competed professionally between 2004 and 2010 for the , , and squads. His career highlight was his win in the 2006 Tour of the Basque Country, in which he took victory in the time trial on the final stage to clinch the general classification. Career In 2004, while riding for the team, he finished eighth in the general classification in the Vuelta a España. In the 2005 Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, he finished second behind Alexander Vinokourov on the stage to Mont Ventoux, and finished seventh in the general classification. ONCE cycling team, () also known as Liberty Seguros, Liberty Seguros–Würth and in succession in its final year, Astana–Würth and Astana was a Spanish cycling team. It road bicycle racing, competed in the Union Cycliste Internationale, UCI UCI ProTour, ProTour circuit. On 25 May 2006, Liberty Mutual ("seguros" means "insurance" in Spanish) pulled out of primary sponsorship due to a Operación Puerto doping case, doping scandal involving the directeur sportif, Manolo Saiz. On 2 June 2006, the team acquired a primary sponsor named Astana, after the capital of Kazakhstan. Würth was co-sponsor until 3 July 2006, withdrawing at the end of the 2006 Tour de France, in which didn't compete. Kaiku () was a Spanish UCI Professional Continental cycling team based in the Basque country that participated in UCI Continental Circuits races and when selected as a wildcard to UCI ProTour events. The team was managed by Eneko Garate with assistance from directeur sportifs Óscar Guerrero, Juan Hernández and Juan Campos. The lead sponsor, Kaiku Corporación Alimentaria, is a Basque country dairy products company in which Caja Rural de Navarra at one time held a financial stake. In its first season, 2005, Kaiku, a.k.a. Juan José Cobo
Juan José Cobo Acebo (born 21 February 1981 in Torrelavega, Cantabria) is a retired Spanish professional road racing cyclist. He won the 2011 Vuelta a España as a rider, his first and only major title but in July 2019 he was stripped of this title after being found guilty of doping by the UCI. He was considered a climber who also is able to time trial. On 13 June 2019, the UCI stated that Cobo had been found guilty of a doping violation, based on his biological passport data. Biography In 2003, Cobo won the Spanish under-23 time-trial championships. Stefano Garzelli (born 16 July 1973) is an Italian former professional road racing cyclist, who competed as a professional between 1997 and 2013. The high point of his career was his overall win in the 2000 Giro d'Italia, after a close three-way competition with Gilberto Simoni and Francesco Casagrande.
