2005 Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 2005 Southland Conference men's basketball tournament took place March 8–13, 2005. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were played at the home arena of the higher seeded-teams, with the championship game played at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana won the championship game over second-seeded , and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Ricky Woods of Southeastern Louisiana was named the tournament's MVP. Format The top eight eligible men's basketball teams in the Southland Conference received a berth in the conference tournament. After the conference season, teams were seeded by conference record. For the semifinal round, the remaining teams were reseeded. 2004–05 Southeastern Louisiana Lions Basketball Team
The 2004–05 Southeastern Louisiana Lions basketball team represented Southeastern Louisiana University during the 2004–05 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Lions, led by sixth-year head coach Billy Kennedy, played their home games at the University Center in Hammond, Louisiana as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 24–9, 13–3 in Southland play to finish in a tie for the Southland regular season championship with Northwestern State. As the No. 2 seed in the Southland tournament, they defeated Texas State, Sam Houston State, and Northwestern State to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament the first, and only, appearance in program history. Billy Kennedy (basketball)
William Joseph Kennedy Jr. (born February 2, 1964) is an American basketball coach who is an assistant coach for Wichita State University men's basketball team. Previously, Kennedy was the head coach of the Texas A&M University men's basketball team. He took over the position vacated by Mark Turgeon in May 2011. Prior to this, he held the same position at Murray State University for five seasons. Kennedy previously held the same position at Centenary and Southeastern Louisiana. He has served 13 seasons as a collegiate head coach and 13 as an assistant. Kennedy is a 1986 graduate of Southeastern Louisiana and 1984 graduate of Delgado Community College in New Orleans. Southland Conference
The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana). It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Southland sponsors 18 sports, 10 for women and eight for men, and is governed by a presidential Board of Directors and an Advisory Council of athletic and academic administrators. Chris Grant became the Southland's seventh commissioner on April 5, 2022. From 1996 to 2002, for football only, the Southland Conference was known as the Southland Football League. Southland Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Southland Conference's men's basketball tournament began in 1981, with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. From 1981 to 2001, the first round of the tournament took place at the higher seed, with the remaining rounds at a set location. In 2002, the Southland changed the format to play games at the campus of sites of each higher seed, during every round of the tournament. This was changed again in 2007, the first year that the conference selected a neutral site for all rounds of the tournament.
