The Australian Football League's 2005 finals series began on the weekend of 2 September 2005 and ended with the 109th AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 24 September 2005. The Sydney Swans defeated West Coast, breaking their record 72-year drought between premierships. The top eight teams on the home and away rounds (regular season) ladder qualify for the Finals Series. Ladder Separated only by percentage Adelaide (minor premier) and West Coast topped the ladder (W-L: 17–5), trailed by third placed Sydney (15–7). Jason Blake (born 15 March 1981) is a former Australian rules footballer for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). An "undersized tall defender and occasional ruckman", he held the record for the most games played (209) without receiving any Brownlow Medal votes until he eventually received two Brownlow votes for Round 11 in 2012. Luke Patrick Ball (born 25 May 1984) is a former professional Australian rules football player who played for the and football clubs in the Australian Football League. From 2003 to 2009 he played 142 games for the St Kilda Football Club where he was captain in 2007 and best and fairest and All-Australian in 2005. James Gwilt
James Gwilt (born 11 August 1986) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played with the St Kilda Football Club and the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Gwilt's mother is from Papua New Guinea and his father, Jason, is of Welsh descent and immigrated with his parents and siblings from Crowle (Worcestershire) in England to Australia in the late 1950s. Nick Riewoldt
Nicholas Fredrick Riewoldt ( ; born 17 October 1982) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Robert Jeffrey Harvey (born 21 August 1971) is an Australian rules football coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). As a player, he played his entire career with St Kilda in the AFL. Simon Goodwin
Simon Goodwin (born 26 December 1976) is an Australian rules football coach and former player. He has been the senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club of the Australian Football League (AFL) since 2017. As a player, Goodwin tallied 275 AFL games, all as a midfielder for the Adelaide Football Club between 1996 and 2010. He won two premierships with the Crows in 1997 and 1998, was a five-time All-Australian, and captained Adelaide for his final three seasons. As coach of Melbourne, Goodwin led the Demons back into the finals in 2018, and in 2021 coached Melbourne to its first premiership victory in 57 years. Scott Welsh
Scott Nathan Welsh (born 7 December 1978) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is the nephew of former Glenelg and North Melbourne player Kym Hodgeman, and cousin of former Glenelg and Richmond player Ben Moore. Debuting with North Melbourne in 1996 as a 17-year-old, Welsh was seen as a development player who started to get regular game time in 1998. Graham Johncock
Graham Johncock (born 21 October 1982) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). A Wirangu man, Johncock is an Indigenous Australian from Port Lincoln in South Australia where he currently resides with his partner and four children. Johncock is currently president at his junior club Mallee Park Football Club who compete in the Port Lincoln Football League. Robert Shirley (footballer)
Robert Shirley (born 9 June 1980) is an Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He also played for the Woodville-West Torrens Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Shirley was known as one of the best taggers in the AFL. AFL career Originally drafted from Woodville-West Torrens with pick 67 in the 1999 AFL Draft, Shirley played 21 games in his first three seasons at the highest level before being delisted at the end of the 2002 AFL season. Ken McGregor (footballer)
Ken McGregor (born 29 January 1981) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Adelaide in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted at pick 75 in the 1998 AFL Draft. After retiring from professional football he spent some time as a political journalist for the ''Adelaide Advertiser'' before moving to Canberra. He also played football for Ainslie in the North East Australian Football League (NEAFL).
