2004 In Turkish Television
This is a list of Television in Turkey, Turkish television-related events from 2004. Background "By 2004 there were approximately one million Cable-TV subscribers" in the country. Doğan Media Group controlled approximately 40 percent of the broadcasting advertising market. Medya TV, a Kurdish satellite channel, that had been emitting from France since 1999 after having their license (as MED TV) revoked by British authorities, faced the same problem with the French authorities due to alleged links with the Kurdistan Workers' Party, PKK; the channel was renamed again and, as Roj TV, started emitting from Denmark from 2004 onwards before repeated Turkish efforts to stop the channel from emitting. Barış Akarsu
Barış Akarsu (June 29, 1979 – July 4, 2007) was a Turkish Anatolian rock singer and actor who rose to fame after winning the television series ''Akademi Türkiye'' (Academy Turkey) in July 2004. He released two studio albums in three years and was also acting in television series ''Yalancı Yarim'' (My Lying Lover) which aired on Star TV. On June 29, 2007, he was seriously injured in a car crash on his way back from a charity concert for children. After spending five days in an intensive care unit, he died of complications from the crash on July 4, 2007, at the age of 28. He donated most of his concert money. Early life Akarsu was born and raised in Bartın, in northern Turkey. He was a huge fan of rock music, listening to music from Ruhi Su, Cem Karaca and Barış Manço as well as Western acts like Led Zeppelin or U2. ''Türkstar'' was a 2004 Turkish reality television singing competition show based on the popular British show ''Pop Idol''. It was hosted by Seray Sever, Gamze Özçelik and Haldun Dormen. "Wild Dances" is a song composed and recorded by Ukrainian singer-songwriter Ruslana, with lyrics by herself, Oleksandr Ksenofontov, Jamie Maher, Michael Fayne, Sherena Dugani and Yuliya Rai. It in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, held in Istanbul, resulting in the country's first win at the contest. "Wild Dances" was subsequently released as a single and topped the charts of Flanders and Greece. Background Conception "Wild Dances" was composed and recorded by Ruslana, with lyrics by herself, Oleksandr Ksenofontov, Jamie Maher, Michael Fayne, and Sherena Dugani. The work on the song lasted for about three months. Editing and sound engineering was done by Ruslana together with specialists from Kyiv, London, and New York City. The recording was done together with a guitarist from Cool Before, and an ex-trumpet player from Zdob și Zdub. Abdi İpekçi Arena
Abdi İpekçi Arena, formerly known as Abdi İpekçi Sports Complex, was a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, Turkey, situated just outside the ancient city walls, in Yedikule. History Designed in 1979, and opened on 3 June 1989, after several years of interrupted construction, it was named after the renowned Turkish journalist Abdi İpekçi. It was the primary basketball venue in Istanbul for two decades and hosted many (mostly the international) games of Istanbul's four top basketball clubs Anandolu Efes, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Besiktas, as well as many other sports events and concerts. However, its significance declined after the opening of Sinan Erdem Dome in 2010, which surpassed Abdi İpekçi Arena as the biggest and most state of the art arena in Istanbul.
