Cal McCombs
Cal McCombs (born August 4, 1945) is a former American football player and coach. He was the 29th head football coach for the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, Virginia, serving for seven seasons, from 1999 to 2005, compiling a record of 19–60. He lives in Isle of Palms, South Carolina with his wife Lynne. A native of Belton, South Carolina, McCombs is a 1967 graduate of The Citadel, where he earned five varsity letters in football and track. As a defensive back in football, he was an All-Southern Conference and All-State selection. McCombs was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. McCombs was the secondary coach at The Citadel from 1971 to 1983 under head coaches Red Parker, Bobby Ross, and Art Baker and also coached track for two years. He next served as secondary coach and defensive coordinator at the United States Air Force Academy before being named head football coach at VMI in 1998. American Legion Memorial Stadium is a 10,500-seat stadium located on 7th Street in the Elizabeth community of Charlotte, North Carolina. It is located on a complex with the Grady Cole Center. The Military Classic of the South is an American college football rivalry game played between The Citadel and the Virginia Military Institute. The first game between the two military schools was in 1920. The game has been played nearly continuously since World War II; since then, only five seasons have seen the game not played. The 2002 Appalachian State Mountaineers football team represented Appalachian State University as a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon) during the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Led by 14th-year head coach Jerry Moore, the Mountaineers compiled an overall record of 8–4 with a mark of 6–2 in conference play, tying for second place in the SoCon. Appalachian State advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship playoffs, where they lost to Maine in the first round.
