2002 Prague Municipal Election
The 2002 Prague municipal election was held as part of 2002 Czech municipal elections. It was held on 1 and 2 November 2002. Civic Democratic Party has won the election and Pavel Bém became the Mayor of Prague. Background Civic Democratic Party (ODS) won 1998 municipal election in Prague and Jan Kasl became the mayor. He resigned on the position in May 2002 after conflicts with his colleagues in the party. He left ODS and formed new party called European Democrats. Igor Němec replaced Kasl as the Mayor of Prague. Campaign Pavel Bém became Civic Democratic Party candidate for Mayor. Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was led by Jiří Paroubek. Freedom Union was led by Michael Hvížďala. European Democrats were led by Jan Kasl. Campaign started in October 2002. Parties filled the city with billboards. ODS focused on safety. Freedom Union promised easily available housing. Czech Social Democratic Party
Social Democracy (, SOCDEM), known as the Czech Social Democratic Party (, ČSSD) until 10 June 2023, is a social democratic political party in the Czech Republic. Sitting on the centre-left of the political spectrum and holding pro-European views, it is a member of the Party of European Socialists, the Socialist International, and the Progressive Alliance. Masaryk Democratic Academy is the party-affiliated's think tank. The ČSSD was a junior coalition party within Andrej Babiš' Second Cabinet's minority government from June 2018, and was a senior coalition party from 1998 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2017. Party For The Open Society
The Party for the Open Society (, SOS) is a minor social liberal political party in the Czech Republic. The party origins were in the Civic Movement (), a liberal group founded in 1991 within Civic Forum. In 1993 the party was renamed the Free Democrats (). After poor results in local elections in 1994, the party merged with the Liberal National Social Party (LSNS) to become the Free Democrats-Liberal National Social Party (). The merged party again returned poor results in parliamentary elections in 1996, and amid political disagreements over the nationalist views of ex-members of the LSNS, many Free Democrats left the party in 1997, forming the Party for the Open Society in 1998, with 120-150 members. The Green Party () is a green political party in the Czech Republic. History The Green party was founded in 1990 following the return to liberal democracy in Czechia following the Velvet Revolution. However, the party remained on the political margins until Jaromír Štětina was able to capture a seat in the Senate (upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic) in 2004. It was during this time that the Greens campaigned on pacificism (rejecting the idea that any foreign military power should have military bases in the Czech Republic) and greater incorporation of grassroots democracy in the country. The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (, KSČM) is a communist party in the Czech Republic. As of 2022, KSČM has a membership of 20,450. Freedom Union – Democratic Union
The Freedom Union–Democratic Union (, US–DEU) was a small pro-European liberal political party in the Czech Republic from 1998 to 2011. The Freedom Union was founded in January 1998 by former members of the Civic Democratic Party who were unhappy with the leadership of Václav Klaus. After initially serving in a caretaker government, Freedom Union went into opposition after the 1998 election. In opposition, Freedom Union merged with the Democratic Union, and formed an alliance with the Christian Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL). From 2002 to 2006 Freedom Union was part of a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party and KDU-ČSL. Pavel Bém (born 18 July 1963) is a Czech Republic, Czech physician and politician. Between 28 November 2002 and 30 November 2010 he served as the List of mayors of Prague, Mayor of the Capital City of Prague, and re-elected in 2006. On 19 November 2006 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Civic Democratic Party (Czech Republic), Civic Democratic Party.
