Gosport Borough Council
Gosport Borough Council is the local authority for the borough of Borough of Gosport, Gosport, in the county of Hampshire, England. The council consists of 28 councillors, two or three for each of the 14 Ward (electoral subdivision), wards in the town. It is currently controlled by the Liberal Democrats (UK), Liberal Democrats, led by Peter Chegwyn. The borough council is based at Gosport Town Hall. History Gosport was historically part of the parish of Alverstoke. Gosport's first form of local government was a body of improvement commissioners known as the "Gosport Town Trustees", established in 1763. In 1874 the town trustees were replaced by a Local Board of Health, Local Board (also known as the sanitary district, Urban Sanitary Authority) and the local government district was enlarged to cover the whole parish of Alverstoke, and so the new body was called the "Alverstoke Local Board". Gosport
Gosport ( ) is a town and non-metropolitan borough on the south coast of Hampshire, South East England. At the 2011 Census, its population was 82,662. Gosport is situated on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour, opposite the city of Portsmouth, to which it is linked by the Gosport Ferry. Gosport lies south-east of Fareham, to which it is linked by a Bus Rapid Transit route and the A32. Until the last quarter of the 20th century, Gosport was a major naval town associated with the defence and supply infrastructure of His Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Portsmouth. As such over the years extensive fortifications were created. Gosport is still home to and a Naval Armament Supply Facility, as well as a Helicopter Repair base.
