The 2002 Boston Marathon was the 106th running of the annual marathon race in Boston, United States and was held on April 15, 2002. The elite men's race was won by Kenya's Rodgers Rop in a time of 2:09:02 hours and the women's race was won by another Kenyan Margaret Okayo in 2:20:43. Rodgers Rop
Rodgers Rop (born 16 February 1976) is a long-distance runner from Kenya. In 2002, Rop won both the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon. He joined an exclusive club of men who have won both races: Bill Rodgers, Alberto Salazar, Ibrahim Hussein, Joseph Chebet, Meb Keflezighi, and Geoffrey Mutai (see also List of winners of the Boston Marathon and List of winners of the New York City Marathon). Rop tried to defend his Boston and New York titles in 2003 but finished 7th and 2nd respectively. In 2006 he improved his personal best to 2:07:34, when he finished 6th at the London Marathon. In 2007 he won the Hamburg Marathon in 2:07:32, one second ahead of Wilfred Kigen, setting again a personal best. Like many other Kenyan athletes, Rop works as a police officer in the offseason. Joshua Kipkemboi (born 22 February 1959) is a retired Kenyan athlete who specialised in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He represented his country at the 1987 World Championships reaching the final where he failed to finish the race. Mark J. Coogan (born May 1, 1966, Manhasset, New York, United States) is an American coach and retired American track athlete. Running career He attended Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, Massachusetts, and the University of Maryland, College Park. Coogan was coached at the University of Maryland by Charles Florence Torpey, who headed the Men's and Women's running teams at La Salle University until his untimely death. While in college, Coogan specialized in the steeplechase. Coogan was the first Massachusetts native to run the mile in under four minutes. In March 1995, at the Pan-American Games (Mar del Plata, Argentina), Coogan earned the silver medal in the Marathon, in a time of 2:15:21.
