2001 NCAA Division I-A Football Rankings
Two human polls and one formulaic ranking make up the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football rankings. Unlike most sports, college football's governing body, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), does not bestow a National Championship title for Division I-A football. That title is primarily bestowed by different polling agencies. There are several polls that currently exist. The main weekly polls are the AP Poll and Coaches Poll. About halfway through the season the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings are released. 2001 Florida Gators Football Team
The 2001 Florida Gators football team represented the University of Florida as a member of the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) during the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by Steve Spurrier in his 12th and final season as head coach, the Gators compiled an overall record of 10–2 with mark of 6–2 in conference play, placing second in the SEC's Eastern Division title. Florida was invited to the Orange Bowl, where the Gators defeated Maryland. The team played home games at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on the university's Gainesville, Florida campus. Sophomore quarterback Rex Grossman threw for over 4,000 yards and was Heisman Trophy runner-up. Grossman, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and defensive end Alex Brown were consensus All-Americans. 2001 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team
The 2001 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame in the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was coached by Bob Davie and played its home games at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. Season overview With 19 recruits signed to help replace the nine players leaving for the NFL, there were high expectations for the Irish for the 2001 season. Three players were named to pre-season All-America teams while the team was ranked as highly as 12th in the nation. The 2001 Washington Huskies football team was an American football team that represented the University of Washington during the 2001 NCAA Division I-A football season. In its third season under head coach Rick Neuheisel, the team compiled an 8-4 record, finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference, and was outscored by opponents 370 to 353. Running back Willie Hurst and linebacker Ben Mahdavi were selected as the team's most valuable players on offense and defense, respectively. The season opened with tragedy when 16 UW alumni and fans were killed in a plane crash in the Yucatan Peninsula on September 12.
