2001 AFLQ State League Season
The 2001 AFLQ State League season was the 93rd season of the AFL Queensland State League (AFLQSL), the highest-level senior men's Australian rules football competition in Queensland. The season began on 24 April and concluded on 23 September. Ten clubs − , , , Mayne, , , Northern Eagles, , and Western Magpies − took part in the competition. The premiership was won by Brisbane reserves for the first time, after defeating minor premiers by 12 points in the 2001 AFLQ State League Grand Final. It was one of two premierships Brisbane won that year, with the club's senior side also winning the 2001 AFL Grand Final the following week. This would be the only time Brisbane would win an AFLQSL/QAFL premiership, and their only reserves-level premiership until the 2012 NEAFL Grand Final. Brisbane Lions
The Brisbane Lions are a professional Australian rules football in Australia, Australian rules football club based in Brisbane, Queensland, that compete in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's elite competition. Brisbane are the reigning AFL List of VFL/AFL premiers, premiers, having won the 2024 AFL Grand Final, 2024 Grand Final by sixty points. The Lions came into existence in 1996 when the AFL expansion club the Brisbane Bears, established in 1987, absorbed the AFL operations of one of the league's foundation clubs, Fitzroy Football Club, Fitzroy, established in Melbourne, Victoria in 1883. Dylan McLaren
Dylan McLaren (born 8 May 1982) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League. He was recruited as the number 9 draft pick in the 2001 Preseason draft from Sale. He made his AFL debut for the Brisbane Lions in Round 20, 2001 against Fremantle. He played for Brisbane's reserves team in the winning 2001 AFLQ State League Grand Final. Dylan struggled to have any major impact on his games until 2004, when he was a consistent player in the Lions' final 22. Dylan was delisted, and picked up by the Carlton Football Club with the first pick in the pre-season draft, at the end of the 2005 season, with the intention that he would fill the back-up ruck position behind Barnaby French. Giffin Park is a sports venue in Coorparoo, a suburb in Brisbane, Australia. It includes an Australian rules football ground. It was formerly used by the Brisbane Lions as their secondary training venue and is used during the summer due to clashes with the Australian Cricket season. Richard Hadley
Richard Hadley (born 29 March 1983) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Brisbane Lions and Carlton in the Australian Football League (AFL). Hadley was recruited from the East Fremantle Football Club junior system in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) to the Brisbane Lions in the 2000 AFL Draft. He made his AFL debut in 2001, and played for Brisbane's reserves team in the winning 2001 AFLQ State League Grand Final. While suffering from osteitis pubis, he spent the 2001, 2002 and 2003 seasons as a prolific ball-winner player in the Lions' reserves team. Shane Morrison
Shane Morrison (born 10 January 1981) is an Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Lions and Richmond in the Australian Football League (AFL). Morrison, who grew up in Cairns, is the son of former South Melbourne player Peter Morrison. As his father had played over 50 games for South Melbourne, Morrison was eligible to be drafted by Sydney under the father–son rule. He was however also able to go to Brisbane using the rule, due to Peter's post VFL career in Queensland. Already in Brisbane playing for the Northern Eagles, he chose to go to the Lions and was picked up with the 44th selection of the 1999 AFL draft. Craig Bolton
Craig Bolton (born 31 May 1980) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He often plays at full back or on the half back flank. He is unrelated to former Swans teammate Jude Bolton. Playing career Having played for the Eastlake Football Club in Canberra, and the NSW/ ACT Under 18s team, Bolton was picked by Brisbane in the 3rd round of the 1998 AFL Draft. He was on the Lions' list from 1999 until 2002, making his debut against Carlton in Round 1 of the 2000 season. Aaron Shattock (born 2 May 1980) is an Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide in the Australian Football League (AFL). AFL career Brisbane Lions (2000–2004) A midfielder, Shattock was recruited to Brisbane from Woodville-West Torrens and made his debut in 2000. He played for Brisbane's reserves team in the winning 2001 AFLQ State League Grand Final. Ben Robbins
Benjamin Anthony Robbins (born 27 December 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears, the Brisbane Lions and North Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL). Robbins, who was from Maffra, played in the TAC Cup for Gippsland Power before he was recruited by the West Coast Eagles with the 33rd pick of the 1993 AFL draft. The son of former Richmond player Graham Robbins, he chose to remain in Gippsland and it was not until 1995 that he made the move to Western Australia. Robbins was unable to break into the Eagles team and instead spent the season playing for Perth in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Marcus Picken (born 9 October 1979) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). Picken is the son of former Collingwood star Billy Picken, older brother of former Western Bulldogs player Liam Picken, and cousin of former teammate and Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown. Recruited from the North Ballarat Rebels, he made his debut in 1998 after being selected by Brisbane in the 1997 AFL draft but was unable to make an impact in his limited opportunities.
