Tennis
Tennis is a List of racket sports, racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent (singles (tennis), singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles (tennis), doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket strung with a cord to strike a hollow rubber tennis ball, ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's tennis court, court. The object is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. 2000 Australian Open – Women's Doubles
Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova were the defending champions, but competed this year with different partners. Hingis partnered with Mary Pierce and finished the tournament as runners-up, while Kournikova teamed up with Barbara Schett and lost in semifinals to Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs. Raymond and Stubbs won the title, defeating Hingis and Pierce 6–4, 5–7, 6–4 in the final. It was the 1st Grand Slam doubles title and 15th title overall for Raymond, and the 1st Grand Slam doubles title and 21st title overall for Stubbs, in their respective careers. Mark Woodforde
Mark Raymond Woodforde, OAM (born 23 September 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. He is best known as one half of " The Woodies", a doubles partnership with Todd Woodbridge. Woodforde was born in Adelaide, and joined the men's professional tennis ATP Tour in 1984. Woodforde won four singles titles, including his hometown Adelaide tournament twice. His best singles result in a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-final of the Australian Open in 1996, his 38th Grand Slam singles tournament, which remains a record for the longest time taken to reach a maiden semi-final. Woodforde is best known for his doubles success, having won twelve Grand Slam doubles titles in his career – one French Open, two Australian Opens, three US Opens, and a record six Wimbledons. 2000 French Open – Men's Doubles
Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde defeated Paul Haarhuis and Sandon Stolle in the final, 7–6(9–7), 6–4 to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2000 French Open. With the win, the Woodies completed the career Grand Slam and the career Super Slam. Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes were the defending champions, but competed with different partners. Bhupathi played alongside David Prinosil, but lost to Juan Ignacio Carrasco and Jairo Velasco Jr. in the second round. Magnus Norman
Magnus Norman (born 30 May 1976) is a Swedish former professional tennis player and current coach. He was ranked world No. 2 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), in June 2000. Norman won twelve ATP Tour singles titles, including a Masters event at the 2000 Rome Masters, and was runner-up at a major at the 2000 French Open. Since retiring from the sport in 2004, Norman has coached Thomas Johansson, Robin Söderling, and Stan Wawrinka. He owns the Good to Great Tennis Academy. Among its students are Wawrinka, Gaël Monfils, and Grigor Dimitrov. Norman also plays bandy, a sport he played in his youth before deciding to concentrate on tennis. Gustavo Kuerten
Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten (; born 10 September 1976) is a Brazilian former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the list of ATP number 1 ranked singles tennis players, world No. 1 in men's singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals for 43 weeks, including as the year-end No. 1 in 2000 ATP Tour, 2000. Kuerten won 20 ATP Tour-level singles titles, including three Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, majors at the French Open in 1997 French Open – Men's singles, 1997, 2000 French Open – Men's singles, 2000, and 2001 French Open – Men's singles, 2001, as well as the 2000 Tennis Masters Cup – Singles, 2000 Tennis Masters Cup. 2000 French Open – Men's Singles
Gustavo Kuerten defeated Magnus Norman in the final, 6–2, 6–3, 2–6, 7–6(8–6) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2000 French Open. It was his second French Open title and second major title overall. The final was a rematch of the Rome final a month prior, in which Norman had prevailed. The final took a dramatic turn in the fourth set, when on match point down, at 15–40 on his own serve, Norman challenged a call that was ruled out, initially ending the match. The umpire overruled in favor of Norman, extending the match, whence Norman would go on to save another nine match points, until 52 points later, Kuerten finally prevailed on the eleventh match point in the fourth-set tiebreak. The French Open (), also known as Roland-Garros (), is a tennis tournament organized by the French Tennis Federation annually at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. Todd Woodbridge
Todd Andrew Woodbridge, OAM (born 2 April 1971) is an Australian broadcaster and former professional tennis player. During his playing career, he formed multiple Grand-Slam winning doubles partnerships with Mark Woodforde (nicknamed " The Woodies") and later Jonas Björkman. He is among the most successful doubles players of all time, having won 16 Grand Slam men's doubles titles (nine Wimbledons, three US Opens, three Australian Opens and one French Open), and a further six Grand Slam mixed doubles titles (three US Opens, one French Open, one Wimbledon, one Australian Open). Arantxa Sánchez Vicario
Aránzazu Isabel María "Arantxa" Sánchez Vicario (; born 18 December 1971) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women's singles by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for 12 weeks, as well as the world No. 1 in women's doubles for 111 weeks. Jared Palmer
Jared Eiseley Palmer (born July 2, 1971) is an American former professional tennis player who won 28 professional doubles titles (including his wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon) and one singles title in his career on the ATP Tour. He also won four double titles on the challenger's circuit (two in 1992 and two in 1993). Palmer turned professional in 1991 after winning the 1991 NCAA Division 1 singles title as a sophomore playing for Stanford University. 2000 Australian Open – Mixed Doubles
Rennae Stubbs and Jared Palmer defeated 1993 champions Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and Todd Woodbridge in the final, 7–5, 7–6(7–3), to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 2000 Australian Open. By winning the title, Stubbs won her second Grand Slam title, after she won her first in Women's Doubles earlier in the week, and Palmer won his first major Mixed Doubles title. Mariaan de Swardt and David Adams were the defending champions, but De Swardt chose not to defend her title and Adams played with Kristie Boogert.
