2000 Lunas By-election
A by-election was held for the Kedah State Assembly seat of Lunas on 29 November 2000 following the nomination day on 21 November 2000. The seat fell vacant after the incumbent assemblyman, Joe Fernandez, the deputy state chief of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, was assassinated in Bukit Mertajam on 4 November 2000. He won a 4,700-vote majority by polling 9,760 votes against three candidates: 5,060 votes for M. Kathiravelo of Democratic Action Party (DAP), Ibrahim Mohamed Rashdi (Independent) 2,158 votes and N. Letchumanan (Independent) 87 votes in the general elections in 1999. S. Lunas, Kedah
Lunas (Tamil: லுனாஸ், Chinese: 魯乃 ) is a sub-district of Kulim District which lies in Kedah, Malaysia. Lunas also serves as a state constituency in the Parliament Constituency of Padang Serai, Kedah. The town is famous for Roast Duck rice. The majority of people here are ethnic Chinese and Indian. Meanwhile, total population stand at 18,236 Development history The town was founded in the early 20th century, while its shophouses were constructed between 1910s and 1930s, when Kedah was under British protection at that time. The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC; ta, மலேசிய இந்திய காங்கிரஸ், Malēciya Intiya Kāṅkiras; formerly known as Malayan Indian Congress) is a Malaysian political party. Bukit Mertajam
Bukit Mertajam ( Jawi:بوكيت مرتاجم) is the administrative centre of the city of Seberang Perai in Penang, Malaysia. It also serves as the seat of the Central Seberang Perai District. , Bukit Mertajam (core) contains a total of 13,097 residents. Whilst founded in the 19th century as an agricultural area, Bukit Mertajam also evolved into a transportation hub, following the completion of a railway line towards Perai at the end of the century. The Democratic Action Party (abbreviation: DAP; ms, Parti Tindakan Demokratik; ; ta, ஜனநாயக செயல் கட்சி) is a Centre-left politics, centre-left social democracy, social democratic political party in Malaysia. 1999 Malaysian General Election
A general election was held on Monday, 29 November 1999 for members of the 10th Parliament of Malaysia. Voting took place in all 193 parliamentary constituencies of Malaysia, each electing one Member of Parliament to the Dewan Rakyat, the dominant house of Parliament. State elections also took place in 394 state constituencies in 11 out of 13 states of Malaysia (except Sabah and Sarawak) on the same day. This was the last election for Mahathir Mohamad as Prime Minister and Chairman of Barisan Nasional, until 2018. This was also the first election held in a single day nationwide.
