The 1st ACTRA Awards were presented on April 14, 1972 to honour achievements in Canadian television in 1971. As the first time that dedicated Canadian television awards had been presented by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists separately from the inclusion of television films in the Canadian Film Awards program, they were a modest affair, with presentations in just two competitive categories, one for acting and one for journalism, and a lifetime achievement award for contributions to Canadian broadcasting. Pierre Berton
Pierre Francis de Marigny Berton, CC, O.Ont. (July 12, 1920 – November 30, 2004) was a Canadian writer, journalist and broadcaster. Berton wrote 50 best-selling books, mainly about Canadiana, Canadian history and popular culture. He also wrote critiques of mainstream religion, anthologies, children's books and historical works for youth. He was a reporter and war correspondent, an editor at ''Maclean's Magazine'' and ''The Toronto Star'' and, for 39 years, a guest on Front Page Challenge. He was a founder of the Writers' Trust of Canada, and won many honours and awards. Graham Spry
Graham Spry, CC (February 20, 1900 - November 24, 1983) was a Canadian broadcasting pioneer, business executive, diplomat and socialist. He was the husband of Irene Spry and father of Robin Spry, Richard Spry and Lib Spry. Life He was born in St. Thomas, Ontario. While a student at the University of Manitoba, he became an editorial writer at the ''Manitoba Free Press'', where he was mentored by editor and Canadian nationalist John W. Dafoe. He also edited the student newspaper, the Manitoban. He then studied history at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. John Edgar Webster, (April 15, 1918 – March 2, 1999) was a Scottish-born Canadian journalist, radio, and television personality, regarded as "king of the Vancouver airwaves" from the 1950s to his retirement, in 1988. Early life Webster was born in Glasgow, the son of a Clydeside ironturner. He left school at age 14 to enter into newspaper businesses as a teenager. He worked in Glasgow and on Fleet Street. When World War II broke out, Webster joined the British Army and rose to the rank of major, with most of his six years' service spent in the Middle East. Media career After the war, Webster immigrated to Canada. He covered the labour beat for the ''Vancouver Sun'' newspaper.
