1998 WNBA Expansion Draft
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) held their first expansion draft on February 18, 1998 for the Detroit Shock and the Washington Mystics. This draft allowed the two new expansion teams to select players from the existing eight WNBA teams to fill their debut rosters prior to the start of the 1998 WNBA season. Columbus Quest
The Columbus Quest was a professional women's basketball franchise located in Columbus, Ohio, in the now-defunct American Basketball League (ABL). They were one of the league's original eight teams that started play in 1996. In the league's brief history, the Quest was its most successful franchise, winning both championships the league awarded. The Quest's head coach was Brian Agler, who finished with a record of 82–22 during the team's two-plus seasons of existence. After Agler left the Quest midseason to become the head coach of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx, the team was coached by player-coach Tonya Edwards . Many of the Quest's players later played for the Lynx, including Edwards, Katie Smith, Andrea Lloyd-Curry, Angie Potthoff and Shanele Stires. Penny Moore
Penny Moore (born January 25, 1969) is a former Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) player. She played in the league from its inception in 1997 to 2000. She played for the Charlotte Sting in 1997, then for the Washington Mystics in 1998-2000. She attended J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia. USA Basketball Moore was named to the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team (now called the U19 team). The team participated in the second Junior World Championship, held in Bilbao, Spain in July 1989. The USA team lost their opening game to South Korea in overtime, then lost a two-point game to Australia. After winning their next game against Bulgaria, the USA team again fell in a close game, losing by three points to Czechoslovakia. The Sacramento Monarchs were a professional basketball team based in Sacramento, California. They played in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) from 1997 until folding on November 20, 2009. They played their home games at ARCO Arena. Tajama Abraham Ngongba (born September 27, 1975) is a former professional basketball player in the Women's National Basketball Association. Abraham attended George Washington University and was the 31st draft pick in the 1997 WNBA draft. She played for Sacramento Monarchs in 1997 and Detroit Shock in 1998. Abraham took a position as the women's Assistant Coach of basketball at George Mason University in 2013. Heidi Ann Horton (née Burge; November 11, 1971) is an American former professional women's basketball player who played overseas from 1993 to 1997 and then played for the Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics of the WNBA from 1997 to 1998. Rhonda Blades Brown (born October 29, 1972) is a former professional basketball player. She was the first pick in the 1998 WNBA expansion draft and was selected by the New York Liberty. Blades was a 4-year starting point guard and captain at Vanderbilt University and played 6 years professionally including the WNBA and abroad.
