1997–98 Reading F.C. Season
The 1997–98 season was Reading's 127th year in existence and fourth consecutive season in the First Division, and covered the period from 1 July 1997 to 30 June 1998. Reading finished the season in 24th position, resulting in relegation back to the Second Division. In the Football League Cup, Reading were knocked out by Middlesbrough at the Fifth Round stage, whilst in the FA Cup, Sheffield United knocked Reading out at the Fifth Round stage. Season events Reading started the season under new manager Terry Bullivant, with Bullivant resigning on 18 March 1998. Alan Pardew was appointed caretaker-manager for seven days before Tommy Burns was appointed as the club's new manager on 26 March 2008. Jamie Ashdown
Jamie Lawrence Ashdown (born 30 November 1980) is an English former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent a large part of his career at Portsmouth, for whom he made the majority of his professional appearances. He came out of retirement in July 2022 to sign for Ascot United F.C. where he had previously been a goalkeeping coach. Club career Reading Born in Reading, Berkshire, Ashdown began his career at Reading when he was eight years old. Ashdown then established a reputation as an exciting prospect for the club. He signed his professional contract with Reading in February 1998. On 12 September 2000, Ashdown made his league debut for the club, coming on as a 74th-minute substitute for Phil Whitehead, and played the rest of the game, as he kept a clean in a 5–0 win against Oldham Athletic. Northampton () is a market town and civil parish in the East Midlands of England, on the River Nene, north-west of London and south-east of Birmingham. Keith McPherson
Keith Anthony McPherson (born 11 September 1963) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League as a central defender for West Ham United, Cambridge United, Northampton Town, Reading and Brighton & Hove Albion. Career Born in Greenwich to Jamaican parents, McPherson was a product of the West Ham United youth team which he joined in 1980 as an apprentice. He was a member of the 1981 Youth Cup winning team which defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the final. He made just one appearance for West Ham, on 20 May 1985, the last game of the 1984-85 season, in a 3-0 home defeat by Liverpool. He was signed for Northampton Town from West Ham for £10,000 in January 1986. He made 216 appearances for the Cobblers before leaving in August 1990, to join First Division side Reading where he played for nine years. Crewe Alexandra F
Crewe () is a railway town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East in Cheshire, England. The Crewe built-up area had a total population of 75,556 in 2011, which also covers parts of the adjacent civil parishes of Willaston, Shavington cum Gresty and Wistaston. Martyn James Booty (born 30 May 1971) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. He made more than 300 appearances in the Football League for Coventry City, Crewe Alexandra, Reading, Southend United, Chesterfield and Huddersfield Town. Sydney Olympic Football Club is an Australian semi-professional soccer club, based in Belmore, Sydney, New South Wales, that plays in the National Premier Leagues NSW. Andrew Bernal (born Andrés Bernal; 16 May 1966 in Canberra, Australia) is a former professional football defender, and later football agent and personal manager for David Beckham. Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Scott Howie
Scott Howie (born 4 January 1972) is a Scottish former professional football goalkeeper. Having played professionally in the English and Scottish football leagues, he last played for English non-league side Wroxham. Howie played for local non-league side Ferguslie United before joining Clyde in 1991, continuing to study for his Business Degree. He graduated with a BA from Strathclyde Business School in July 1994. Howie was capped by Scotland under-21s while with Clyde, making his debut against Malta and also appearing for Clyde later the same day. He also helped Clyde to the Scottish Second Division Championship. In August 1993 he was sold to Norwich City for a fee of £300,000, but made just two first team appearances, both while regular goalkeeper Bryan Gunn was suspended. Nick Colgan
Nicholas Vincent Colgan (born 19 September 1973) is an Irish football coach and former professional footballer who is goalkeeping coach at EFL League Two side Stockport County. As a player, he was a goalkeeper from 1991 to 2013 and first briefly played for his hometown club Drogheda United between 1991 and 1992 before signing for Premier League side Chelsea. Whilst at Stamford Bridge he often found himself as back-up to the likes of Dmitri Kharine and Frode Grodas and spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Grimsby Town, Millwall, Brentford and Reading.
