The 1997 Vuelta a Asturias was the 41st edition of the Vuelta a Asturias road cycling stage race, which was held from 13 May to 18 May 1997. The race started in Avilés and finished in Oviedo. The race was won by Manuel Fernández Ginés Manuel Fernández Ginés (born 25 February 1971 in La Zubia) is a retired Spanish cyclist. Luis Pérez Rodríguez
Luis Pérez Rodríguez (born 16 June 1974 in Torrelaguna, Spain) is retired road racing cyclist. He competed professionally between 1995 and 2007, and last rode for the Andalucía–CajaSur team. During his career, Pérez scored two stage wins in Grand Tour events, both in the Vuelta a España. During his last season with Andalucía–CajaSur, he scored a 1st Overall in the Clásica Internacional de Alcobendas, a three-day stage race. In November 2007, before retiring from Andalucía–CajaSur, Pérez won the first annual Criterium Ciudad de Jaén race, an unofficial two-day competition held during the off-season of the UCI World Tour circuit. Vuelta Asturias
Vuelta Asturias is a professional cycle road race held in Spain in early May each year. The event was first run in 1925 but has not been held consistently until 1968 to present. Since 2005, the race has been organised as a 2.1 event on the UCI Europe Tour. On 25 April 2014, the Vuelta Asturias was suspended one week before its start due to the lack of funds and sponsors. The race returned in 2015, when a two-stage edition was won by Igor Antón (). During his career he excelled as a climbing specialist, climber, winning numerous mountain stages. His nickname was ''El Chava''.
