1997 Russian Gubernatorial Elections
Gubernatorial elections in 1997 took place in 14 regions of the Russian Federation. Background In January–March 1997, the process of holding first gubernatorial elections in all regions of Russia, which began in September 1996, was practically completed. By January 1, six governors-appointees remained in power: Leonid Roketsky in Tyumen Oblast, Yury Lyashko in Amur Oblast, Bolot Ayushiyev in ABAO, Nikolai Sevryugin in Tula Oblast, Mikhail Kislyuk in Kemerovo Oblast and Anatoly Yakimov in Evenkia. By April only Kislyuk remained in office, instead of whom Aman Tuleyev was appointed on June 30. In the first quarter of 1997, re-elections of presidents of four republics (Mari El, Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Tuva) and presidential elections in the breakaway Chechen Republic of Ichkeria were also held. Amangeldy Gumirovich "Aman" Tuleyev (russian: Амангельды (Аман) Гумирович Тулеев, kk, Амангелді Молдағазыұлы Төлеев, ; born 13 May 1944) is a Russian statesman. He served as governor of Kemerovo Oblast from 1997 to 2018 and became the chairman of the Council of People's Deputies of the Kemerovo oblast since April 2018. He ran for President of Russia in 1991, 1996 (withdrawing during the campaign) and 2000, coming fourth in both 1991 and 2000. Career in the Soviet Union Tuleyev was born to a Kazakh father and a half-Tatar half- Bashkir mother in Krasnovodsk, Turkmen SSR, USSR. Early at his career Tuleyev worked as a railway engineer. Sherig-ool Dizizhikovich Oorzhak ( tyv, Шериг-оол Дизижик оглу Ооржак, ; born July 24, 1942), is a Russian retired politician. He was the leader of Tuva for 21 years, from 1986 to 2007. Oorzhak graduated from the Timiryazev Moscow Agricultural academy in 1971. From 1971 until 1980, he worked as an economist at and later the director of a government-owned farm (sovkhoz) in his hometown of . In 1983 he became an activist in the Tuvan branch of the Communist Party. He graduated from Novosibirsk High Communist Party School in 1985. Valery Mukhamedovich Kokov (; kbd, КӀуэкӀуэ Мухьэмэд и къуэ Валерий, October 18, 1941 – October 29, 2005) was a Soviet and Russian politician of Kabardian ethnicity. Early life and political career Kokov was born in Tyrnyauz, Kabardino-Balkaria. He was the leader of Kabardino-Balkaria from 1990 to 2005. He was chairman of the republic's supreme Soviet from 1990 to 1991 and was elected President for the first time in 1992. He effectively neutralized opposition and was re-elected twice in landslide victories; in 1997 with 98% of the vote and in 2002 with 87% of the vote. Yury Abramovich Nozhikov (russian: Юрий Абрамович Ножиков, 1934–2010) was a Soviet electrical engineer and Russian politician who was the first governor of Irkutsk Oblast (East Siberia) in 1991–1997. Early life Yury Chen was born in Leningrad (modern Saint Petersburg) in 1934 to a Chinese father Chen Kin San (Leonid Chen) and Russian mother Tatyana Toropova, who was working as nurse.
