The 1997 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia were announced on Monday 9 June 1997 by the office of the Governor-General. Ross Edwards (born 23 December 1943) is an Australian composer of a wide variety of music including orchestral and chamber music, choral music, children's music, opera and film music. His distinctive sound world reflects his interest in deep ecology and his belief in the need to reconnect music with elemental forces, as well as restore its traditional association with ritual and dance. He also recognises the profound importance of music as an agent of healing. Nicole Livingstone
Nicole Dawn Livingstone, OAM (born 24 June 1971) is an Australian former competitive swimmer. Since retiring from swimming Livingstone has had careers as a television sports commentator and media presenter and as a sports administrator. She was known for a period as Nicole Stevenson, when she was married to Australian cyclist Clayton Stevenson. Early life Livingstone grew up in Melbourne and started swimming at 9. She attended Parkdale Secondary College. Her mother worked at Metropolitan Golf Club and her father at Carlton & United Breweries. She had an older brother, Gary and older sister, Karen. Swimming career Livingstone competed for Australia in three summer Olympics - 1988, 1992, and 1996 - winning both individual and team medals. Romano Pirola
Romano Cesare Pirola is an Australian pancreatology researcher and gastroenterologist. He is a co-founder of the Pancreatic Research Group at the University of South Wales which is credited as the first research group to describe pancreatic stellate cells. Weston Bate
Weston Arthur Bate (24 September 1924 – 31 October 2017) was an Australian historian. Bate served in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. He studied at the University of Melbourne under Manning Clark, Max Crawford, Kathleen Fitzpatrick and John O'Brien. He taught at Brighton Grammar School, Melbourne Grammar School, Bradfield College (Berkshire), and (from 1952 to 1976) at the University of Melbourne. From 1978 until 1989 Bate held the foundation chair of Australian Studies at Deakin University Deakin University is a public university in Victoria, Australia. Peter Andry
Peter Edward Andry, (10 March 1927 – 7 December 2010) was a classical record producer and an influential executive in the recording industry, active from the 1950s to the 1990s. Born in Hamburg, Andry spent his formative years in Melbourne, Australia, where he became a professional flautist, with ambitions to be a conductor. After moving to England, where he studied with William Lloyd Webber and Sir Adrian Boult, he played the flute in the orchestra of a ballet company, with occasional chances to conduct. In 1953 he switched career, joining the Decca Record Company as a producer. Less than three years later he moved to Decca's rival, HMV Records, part of the EMI group, where he rose to become head of the group's classical operations. After retiring from EMI in 1988, Andry headed a new classical label Warner Classics, before retiring finally from the recording industry in 1996. Bruce Ruxton
Bruce Carlyle Ruxton, AM, OBE (6 February 192623 December 2011) was an Australian ex-serviceman and President of the Victorian Returned and Services League from 1979 to 2002. Early life Ruxton grew up in Kew, Victoria. He attended Melbourne High School. War service Ruxton served in World War II in the South West Pacific Area. He enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force on 21 February 1944, listing his civilian occupation as "pupil land surveyor". He was allocated the service number VX94379. In late 1944, he was posted to the Royal Australian Engineers, serving for two months with the 2nd Australian Field Survey Company in Queensland before then joining the 2/1st Australian Topographical Survey Company in December 1944. He sailed to Morotai with this unit in April 1945. Enid Lucy Robertson
Enid Lucy Robertson () (20 November 1925 - 10 July 2016) was a systematic botanist, curator of herbaria, and conservationist from South Australia. In the 1970s, she developed a new and innovative way to manage reserves, writing the ''Watiparinga Reserve Management Plan'', which subsequently became the model used for other small to medium reserves in urban areas. For this she was awarded a Heritage Award by the Australian Governor General in 1986. Robertson was made a member of the order of Australia in 1987 for her services to botany.
