Jana Novotná and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario were the defending champions, but lost in quarterfinals to Brenda Schultz-McCarthy and Rennae Stubbs. Gigi Fernández and Natasha Zvereva won the title by defeating Brenda Schultz-McCarthy and Rennae Stubbs 7–5, 6–3 in the final. It was the 4th US Open, 14th Grand Slam title and 61st overall title for Fernández and the 3rd US Open, 14th Grand Slam title and 56th overall title for Zvereva, in their respective doubles careers. Gigi Fernández
Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández (born February 22, 1964) is a Puerto Rican former professional tennis player. Fernández won 17 Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major doubles titles and two Olympic gold medals representing the United States, and reached the List of WTA number 1 ranked doubles tennis players, world No. 1 ranking in doubles. Conchita Martínez Bernat (born 16 April 1972) is a Spanish former professional tennis player and current coach. She was the first Spaniard to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon, doing so in 1994. Martínez also was the runner-up at the 1998 Australian Open and the 2000 French Open. Iva Majoli (born 12 August 1977) is a Croatian former professional tennis player who played for both Yugoslavia and Croatia. Zina Lynna Garrison (born November 16, 1963) is an American former professional tennis player. Amanda Coetzer (born 22 October 1971, in Hoopstad) is a South African former professional tennis player. Coetzer finished in the WTA rankings top 20 for ten consecutive seasons (1992–2001), peaking at world No. 3. Julie Halard-Decugis (born 10 September 1970) is a French former professional tennis player.
