1993 Avon County Council Election
The 1993 Avon County Council election took place on 6 May 1993 to elect members of Avon County Council in England. This was on the same day as other nationwide local elections. The Liberal Democrats made a number of gains, mainly at the expense of the Conservatives. Labour remained the largest group on the council, but were 6 seats short of gaining a majority. This was the last election for Avon County, which was abolished in 1996 and replaced with four new unitary authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Avon County Council
Avon County Council was the county council of the non-metropolitan county of Avon in south west England. It came into its powers on 1 April 1974 and was abolished on 1 April 1996 at the same time as the county. The county council was based at Avon House in Bristol. It was replaced with four authorities: Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council, North Somerset Council and Bath and North East Somerset Council. The wards and electoral divisions in the United Kingdom are electoral districts at sub-national level, represented by one or more councillors. Stephen Roy Williams (born 11 October 1966) is a British Liberal Democrat politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bristol West from the 2005 general election until his defeat by Labour Party candidate Thangam Debbonaire in 2015. Dan Norris (born 28 January 1960) is a British Labour Party politician serving as the Mayor of the West of England since May 2021. He previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wansdyke from 1997 to 2010. Giacomo "Jack" Lopresti (born 23 August 1969) is a British Conservative Party politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Filton and Bradley Stoke since the 2010 general election. Early life and career Lopresti was born on 23 August 1969 in Southmead in Bristol. After leaving school, Lopresti worked in his family ice cream business for over ten years. Richard Beecroft Allan, Baron Allan of Hallam (born 11 February 1966) is a British politician and life peer. He was the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Sheffield Hallam from the general election of Thursday 1 May 1997 until the dissolution of Parliament on 11 April 2005. South Gloucestershire
South Gloucestershire is a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Gloucestershire, South West England. Towns in the area include Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Thornbury, Filton, Patchway and Bradley Stoke, the latter three forming part of the northern Bristol suburbs. The unitary authority also covers many outlying villages and hamlets. The southern part of its area falls within the Greater Bristol urban area surrounding the city of Bristol.
