1992 Utah Attorney General Election
The 1992 Utah Attorney General election was held on November 3, 1992, in order to elect the Attorney General of Utah. Democratic nominee Jan Graham defeated Republican nominee Scott Burns and Libertarian nominee John M. Coombs. General election On election day, 3 November 1992, Democratic nominee Jan Graham won the election by a margin of 5,353 votes against her foremost opponent Republican nominee Scott Burns, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of Attorney General and thus becoming the first woman elected to this office. Jan Graham
Janet Ann Graham Hunt ( Crump; July 19, 1949 – January 29, 2024), best-known as Jan Graham, was an American lawyer from Utah who served as State Attorney General from 1993 to 2001. Other than candidates for Lieutenant Governor running on a ticket with a male candidate, she is the only woman ever elected to statewide office in the state of Utah. She is the last Democrat to hold statewide office in Utah. Early life, education, and legal career Janet Ann Crump was born on July 19, 1949, and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from South High in 1967, and enrolled at Brigham Young University. While at BYU, Crump successfully bypassed BYU’s prohibition on women wearing jeans to its Testing Center by wearing no pants at all, which gave the impression she was wearing a hidden skirt. R. Paul Van Dam (born October 15, 1937) is an American politician and attorney from the state of Utah. He attended East High School and graduated in 1955. Paul and his wife Mary Bailey are fifth-generation Utahns. He served as Attorney General of Utah from 1989 to 1993, as a Democrat. He attended the University of Utah and is a former Salt Lake County district attorney. Under District Attorney Van Dam's leadership, Salt Lake County DA's office was the first jurisdiction to prosecute serial killer Ted Bundy, subsequently getting a conviction. Prior to his serving as DA, there were separate organizations for the county attorney and the district attorney. As DA, he oversaw a huge reorganization to combine the two.
