Middlesbrough ( ), colloquially known as Boro, is a port town in the Borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. Lying to the south of the River Tees, Middlesbrough forms part of the Teesside Built up area, built-up area and the Tees Valley. History Monks and lords Middlesbrough started as a Benedictine priory on the south bank of the River Tees, its name possibly derived from it being midway between the holy sites of Durham, England, Durham and Whitby. The earliest recorded form of Middlesbrough's name is "Mydilsburgh". Some believe the name means 'middle fortress', since it was midway between the two religious houses of Durham and Whitby; others state that it is an Old English personal name (''Midele'' or ''Myhailf'') combined with ''burgh'', meaning town. Andy Dibble
Andrew Gerald Dibble (born 8 May 1965) is a Welsh football coach and former professional player. As a player, he was as a goalkeeper from 1982 to 2006. During his career, he played in the Premier League for Manchester City and in the Scottish Premier Division for Aberdeen and Rangers. He also played in the Football League for Cardiff City, Luton Town, Huddersfield Town, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, Hartlepool United, Carlisle United, Stockport County and Wrexham. Trevor Putney
Trevor Anthony Putney (born 9 April 1960) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Career Ipswich Town Putney began his professional football career fairly late in life when Bobby Robson and Ipswich Town signed him from non-league Brentwood FC, and went on to make 103 appearances. He was voted the club's player of the year by the supporters in 1984 amongst the likes of Wark, Burley, Cooper, Butcher, Osman, Gates and Mariner. He then joined the small band of players who have played for both Ipswich and Norwich City, when he joined the Canaries in the summer of 1986 in a player exchange deal that saw John Deehan join Ipswich. Norwich City Putney spent three seasons with Norwich, making 100 appearances, and enjoying some of the club's best success, finishing 4th in the old First Division (now Premier League). Mark Proctor (footballer)
Mark Proctor (born 30 January 1961) is an English former footballer and coach. Playing career Proctor began his career with Middlesbrough, making his debut in 1978. He joined Nottingham Forest in 1981 for £440,000 before moving on to Sunderland in 1983. He remained with Sunderland for four years before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 1987 for £275,000. After two years in Sheffield he returned to Middlesbrough in 1989 for £300,000. He had further spells with Tranmere Rovers, South Shields and Hartlepool United before retiring in 1998. Managerial career Proctor helped coach Middlesbrough's Academy to the FA Youth Cup in 2004, before becoming their reserve team manager. Jamie Pollock (born 16 February 1974) is an English former football club chairman, manager and professional player. As a player he was a midfielder from 1990 to 2002. He played Premier League football for Middlesbrough, Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City. He also more than 300 appearances in the Football League also appearing for Crystal Palace and Birmingham City as well as a short spell in La Liga with CA Osasuna. Robbie Mustoe
Robin "Robbie" Mustoe (born 28 August 1968) is an English former professional footballer who now works as a commentator for NBC Sports. He made nearly 500 appearances in the Football League and Premier League playing primarily as a defensive midfielder for Oxford United and Middlesbrough, but also making appearances for Charlton Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday. Paul Kerr
Paul Andrew Kerr (born 9 June 1964) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder. He scored 48 goals in 264 league appearances in a 13-year career in the Football League. He began his career at Aston Villa in 1982 before moving on to Middlesbrough in January 1987. He helped the club to win promotion into the First Division with successive promotions in 1986–87 and 1988. He also played in the Full Members Cup final in 1990, before he moved on to Millwall in March 1991. He was sold on to Port Vale in July 1992 for a fee of £140,000. Owen McGee
Owen Edward McGee (born 29 April 1970) is an English former footballer. He joined before eventually securing his place on the first team roster. He became a firm favourite to fans, scoring a single goal in 21 appearances. Despite his lack of goals, he was praised for scoring his first goal, as he played at full-back. He left Middlesbrough in 1992 and played for lower-level clubs Scarborough and Guisborough Town. He then had 3 sons and a wife. Gary Anthony Parkinson (born 10 January 1968) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-back. In 2006, he was appointed Head of Youth at his former club Blackpool, a role he occupied until he suffered a severe stroke in September 2010, leading to a diagnosis of locked-in syndrome. Jimmy Phillips (footballer, Born 1966)
James Neil Phillips (born 8 February 1966) is an English football coach and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers. He also played in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers and in the Football League with Oxford United. Whilst at Bolton he played in the 1995 Football League Cup Final. Following retirement, he returned and has coached their reserve and academy teams as well as holding the position of first team caretaker manager on three occasions. Tony Mowbray
Anthony Mark Mowbray (born 22 November 1963) is an English football manager and former footballer who was most recently the manager of EFL Championship club West Bromwich Albion. Mowbray played for Middlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich Town as a defender. He began his coaching career with Ipswich Town and took his first managerial job at Scottish Premier League side Hibernian, where he won the Scottish Football Writers' Association Manager of the Year award in his first season. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion in 2006, where he won the Football League Championship in 2008, but then suffered relegation from the Premier League the following year. Colin Terence Cooper (born 28 February 1967) is an English football manager and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a defender who notably played in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough. He played over 500 league appearances combined for both clubs. He also played in the Football League for both Millwall and Sunderland. He was capped twice by England, having previously earned eight games at U21 level.
