1990 FIFA World Cup Qualification
The FIFA World Cup qualification, qualification competition for the 1990 FIFA World Cup was a series of tournaments organised by the six FIFA FIFA#Structure, confederations. Each confederation — the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Confederation of African Football (CAF), CONCACAF (North America), CONMEBOL (South America), Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and UEFA (Europe) — was allocated a certain number of the 24 places at the tournament. A total of 116 teams entered the competition, with Italy national football team, Italy, as the host, and Argentina national football team, Argentina, as the holders, qualifying for the final tournament automatically. The first qualification match was played on 17 April 1988 and qualification concluded on 19 November 1989. Marc Van Der Linden
Marc Angéle Vanderlinden (born 4 February 1964) is a Belgium, Belgian former football (soccer), footballer. He began his career with his local side SC Merksem before moving to Royal Antwerp FC in 1982. After seven seasons with the club he moved to R.S.C. Anderlecht in 1989 before joining K.A.A. Gent two years later. In 1995, he moved to Israel to play for Hapoel Rishon LeZion F.C., Ironi Rishon LeZion and then Maccabi Herzliya F.C., Maccabi Herzliya before returning to his original club in 1997. Van der Linden continued to play for Merksem until 2002 when he retired. He also played 19 times for the Belgium national football team, scoring nine goals and appearing in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. An association football tournament was played as part of the 1988 Summer Olympics in South Korea, featuring 16 men's national teams from six continental confederations. The teams were drawn into four groups of four with each group playing a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the top two teams advanced to the knockout stage, beginning with the quarter-finals and culminating with the gold medal match at the Seoul Olympic Stadium on 1 October 1988. Before the final match, the Soviet team relocated from the Olympic Village to a Soviet steamship stationed nearby. The Cachirules scandal was a 1988 association football scandal in which the Mexican Football Federation (FEMEXFUT) was found to have knowingly used at least four overage players (Gerardo Jiménez, José de la Fuente, José Luis Mata, and Aurelio Rivera) on the Mexico under-20 team which played at the 1988 CONCACAF U-20 Tournament, a qualification tournament for the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship. FIFA, the world governing body, imposed a severe sanction on FEMEXFUT, banning all Mexican teams from international competition for two years from 25 April 1988 to 1 July 1990.
