1989–90 Liverpool F.C. Season
The 1989–90 season was the 98th season in Liverpool F.C.'s existence, and their 28th consecutive year in the top flight. This article covers the period from 1 July 1989 to 30 June 1990. Liverpool finished the season as league champions for the 18th time, and looked on course for another double (association football), double, only to be knocked off course in the final stages of the FA Cup for the third season running – this time by a dramatic 4–3 semi-final defeat against a Crystal Palace F.C., Crystal Palace side they had beaten 9–0 in the league earlier in the season. They did finish the season nine points ahead of runners-up Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa in the league, but had faced a stiff challenge from Villa for much of the season and earlier in the season from neighbouring Everton F.C., Everton. The Wembley International Tournament, known as the Makita International Tournament for sponsorship reasons from 1989, was an association football pre-season friendly tournament held annually in England, between 1988 and 1994. Originally organised by IEP Tournaments, it was first staged in August 1988, with Arsenal beating A.C. Milan in the final. All the matches were held at Wembley Stadium. Glenn Ingvar Hysén (; born 30 October 1959) is a Swedish former professional association football, footballer who played as a defender (association football), defender. James Martin Beglin (born 29 July 1963) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a defender, and a current co-commentator for RTÉ, CBS Sports, TNT Sports, and Premier League Productions. Playing career Shamrock Rovers Beglin played schoolboy football in his native city with Bolton and Waterford Bohs before joining Shamrock Rovers in 1980.
