Archie Elliott, Lord Elliott
Walter Archibald Elliott, Lord Elliott, MC (6 September 1922 – 9 August 2008) was a Scottish lawyer and judge. In 1971, he became the first president of the newly established Lands Tribunal for Scotland, and in 1978 took on the additional office of chairman of the Scottish Land Court. Since then, both offices have been held concurrently. Early life Elliott was born in London into a prosperous family. His father was physician Thomas Renton Elliott who would later be appointed Professor of Medicine at University College London, while his mother came from the wealthy McCosh Lanarkshire Iron and Coal Company of Coatbridge. His parents lived in London's historic Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, and in Broughton Place, Scottish Borders, a tower house in the Scottish Baronial style designed by the then unknown Scottish architect Basil Spence in 1935, and completed in 1938. Bus Deregulation In The United Kingdom
Bus deregulation in Great Britain involved the abolition of Road Service Licensing for bus services outside of Greater London. It began in 1980 with long-distance bus services and was extended to local bus services in 1986 under the Transport Act 1985. The abolition of Road Service Licensing removed the public sector's role in fare-setting, routes, and bus frequencies and returned those powers to bus operators. Background The bus industry in Britain grew significantly after the First World War with many demobilised soldiers starting bus companies with new skills in motor engineering and driving acquired through their military service. Those bus services began to erode the railways' profits because they attracted passengers from railways, which led to the creation of the big four railway companies. They are accountable to combined authorities, which were created between 2011 and 2016 and took the role of integrated transport authorities (ITAs). Moir Lockhead
Sir Moir Lockhead OBE DHC (born 25 April 1945 in County Durham, England) is an English businessman. He was Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of UK transport group FirstGroup. Originally a mechanical engineer, he left school ( West Cornforth Secondary Modern) at 15 to become apprentice mechanic in a bus garage in Darlington, before working for a short period as a management trainee with Tarmac. In 1979, he was appointed Chief Engineer of Glasgow City Transport. He joined Grampian Regional Transport in 1985 as General Manager, and went on to lead the successful employee buy-out as GRT Group. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1996 for services to the bus industry. He is a past President of the Confederation of Passenger Transport. GRT Group
GRT Group was a bus operating company in the United Kingdom from 1989 until 1995. It was formed when First Aberdeen, Grampian Regional Transport (GRT) was privatised. It went on to purchase a number of bus companies in England and Scotland. In April 1994, GRT Group was listed on the stock exchange, and in June 1995 merged with Badgerline to form FirstGroup, FirstBus. History The GRT Group was formed as a holding company to purchase First Aberdeen, Grampian Regional Transport, the city bus operator in Aberdeen, Scotland, in a management buyout. Motivation for the buyout was the 1988 announcement that the Scottish Bus Group was to be privatised, sparking fears that GRT could be acquired by a larger group and Asset stripping, asset stripped. Grampian () was one of nine local government regions of Scotland. It was created in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and took its name from the Grampian Mountains.
