1987 NCAA Division II Softball Tournament
The 1987 NCAA Division II softball tournament was the sixth annual postseason tournament hosted by the NCAA to determine the national champion of softball among its Division II members in the United States, held at the end of the 1987 NCAA Division II softball season. The final, four-team double elimination tournament, also known as the Division II Women's College World Series, was played in Quincy, Illinois. Making their sixth consecutive appearance in the finals, Cal State Northridge defeated Florida Southern in a one-game championship series (4–0) to capture the Matadors' fourth Division II national title and third in five years. Double-elimination Tournament
A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost ''two'' games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only ''one'' defeat results in elimination. One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the ''winners' bracket'' and ''losers' bracket'' (''W'' and ''L'' brackets for short; also referred to as ''championship bracket'' and ''elimination bracket'', ''upper bracket'' and ''lower bracket'', or ''main bracket'' and ''repechage'') after the first round. The 1987 NCAA Division II baseball tournament was the 20th edition of the NCAA Division II baseball tournament. The 20-team tournament determined the national champion of baseball among its Division II colleges and universities at the end of the 1987 NCAA Division II baseball season. For the third year, the tournament was played at Paterson Field in Montgomery, Alabama. Defending champions Troy State defeated Tampa, 7–5, in the double-elimination final, the Trojans' second Division II national title. Troy State was coached by Chase Riddle. The 1987 NCAA Division I softball tournament was held in May as the conclusion of the 1987 NCAA Division I softball season. Sixteen Division I college softball teams competed in the NCAA tournament's first round, which consisted of eight regionals with two teams each. The winner of each region, a total of eight teams, advanced to the 1987 Women's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The event, held from May 20 to 24, was the sixth NCAA-sponsored championship in the sport of college softball at the Division I level. Minnesota State Mavericks Softball
The Minnesota State Mavericks are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Minnesota State University, Mankato. The school's athletic program includes 21 varsity sports teams. More than 600 students participate each year in athletics for the university. Most of the university's athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The men's and women's ice hockey teams compete at the Division I level, respectively in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Sacred Heart Pioneers Softball
Softball is a variation of baseball, the difference being that it is played with a larger ball, on a smaller field, and with only underhand pitches (where the ball is released while the hand is primarily below the ball) permitted. Softball is played competitively at club levels, the college level, and the professional level. The game was created in 1887 in Chicago by George Hancock. There are two rule sets for softball generally: ''slow-pitch softball'' and ''fastpitch''. Slow-pitch softball is commonly played recreationally, while women's fastpitch softball was a Summer Olympic sport and can be played professionally. Division II (NCAA)
NCAA Division II (D-II) is the intermediate-level division of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). It offers an alternative to both the larger and better-funded Division I and to the scholarship-free environment offered in Division III. Before 1973, the NCAA's smaller schools were grouped together in the College Division. In 1973, the College Division split in two when the NCAA began using numeric designations for its competitions. The College Division members who wanted to offer athletic scholarships or compete against those who did became Division II, while those who chose not to offer athletic scholarships became Division III.
