1987 McDonald's Open
The 1987 McDonald's Open took place at MECCA Arena in Milwaukee, United States. This was the first edition of the McDonald's Championship and was a round-robin competition between three teams: Milwaukee Bucks, Tracer Milano and the Soviet Union national basketball team. The decider was played between Milwaukee Bucks and the Soviet Union on 25 October 1987. McDonald's Championship
The McDonald's Championship (sometimes called the McDonald's Open) was an international men's basketball competition that featured a representative of the National Basketball Association (representing North America) against champion club teams from Europe, the National Basketball League (representing Oceania), and South America (although it also featured the Soviet national team in 1987). The competition was launched as ''McDonald's Open'' in 1987 with FIBA sanctioning the event and it was renamed as McDonald's Championship in 1995. FIBA EuroLeague champions participated in the competition from its third edition in 1989, while NBA champions would join from 1995 and onwards. McDonald's Open received a lot of media and fan attention and it was held annually from 1987 until 1991. Although it was a weekend-long late-October preseason event, both FIBA and the NBA officially accepted it as a Championship. Paul Pressey
Paul Matthew Pressey (born December 24, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player who was also an assistant coach for seven different National Basketball Association (NBA) teams. Pressey is widely credited as being one of the initial point forwards, combining the attributes of a point guard and forward. Basketball career In 1979, while at Western Texas, Pressey and his teammates went 37-0 and won the NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. In 1982, while playing for Tulsa Golden Hurricane men's basketball, Pressey was awarded MVC Player of the Year after averaging 13.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 3.2 steals. While playing small forward for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1980s, Pressey took on many of the ball handling duties, even leading the team in assists for five straight years. Valery Tikhonenko
Valeri Tikhonenko (; born 19 August 1964) is a retired Soviet and Russian professional basketball player and coach. During his playing career, he played at the small forward and power forward positions, with power forward being his main position. He represented both the Soviet Union and Russia in national team competitions. With the Soviet Union, he won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Professional career Tikhonenko was selected by the Atlanta Hawks, in the 7th round of the 1986 NBA draft, with the 157th overall draft pick. Viktor Pankrashkin
Viktor Pankrashkin (; 10 December 1957 - 24 July 1993) was a Soviet basketball player. Pankrashkin won a gold medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Also, he won one silver and one bronze at the EuroBasket. Club career Pankrashkin only came to basketball at the age of 17. Because of his height, he was noticed by an army basketball coach. After a short time with different army teams he came to CSKA Moscow, where he spent 10 years. In addition to his height, he had an enormous arm length so that he could stand on his heel and touch the basketball ring. With these physical virtues, blocked shots became his trademark. Tiit Sokk
Tiit Sokk (born 15 November 1964) is a retired Estonian professional basketball player and current coach. Often cited as one of the very best European point guards of his generation, he is widely recognized as the greatest Estonian basketball player in history. Elected to the Hall of fame of Estonian basketball in 2010. Professional career Sokk was awarded the Estonian best male athlete award in 1988. Delmer William Harris (born June 18, 1937) is an American basketball coach who is currently the vice president of the Texas Legends, the NBA G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. He served as a head coach for the NBA's Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Los Angeles Lakers, as well as the Legends. Dudley Leroy Bradley (born March 19, 1957) is an American former professional basketball player who played nine seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Bradley played collegiately for the North Carolina Tar Heels and was selected 13th overall in the 1979 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers. Bob McCann
Robert Glen McCann (April 22, 1964 – July 1, 2011) was an American professional basketball player. He was listed as a power forward at 6'7" (or 6'6") and 244–248 lb. McCann died of heart failure in July 2011. McCann was born in Morristown, New Jersey. John Stroeder
John Stroeder (born July 24, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player. Born in Bremerton, Washington, he attended the University of Montana. Despite being taken in the draft in 1980 (by the Portland Trail Blazers), the 6'10" power forward began his short NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1987-88 season, appearing in 41 games and averaging 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest. Paul Mokeski
Paul Keen Mokeski (born January 3, 1957) is an American former basketball player and coach. Standing 7 ft 0 in, he played the center position. He played for five NBA teams, including six seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. Mokeski's last coaching position was as head coach of the Nevada Desert Dogs in North American Premier Basketball in 2018. Early career Mokeski played at Crespi Carmelite High School in Los Angeles, California.
