1986–87 Manchester United F.C. Season
The 1986–87 season was Manchester United's 85th season in the Football League, and their 12th consecutive season in the top division of English football. The pressure on manager Ron Atkinson after last season's failed title challenge remained strong after United lost their opening three games of the season, and despite some decent results in the following few weeks, United bowed out of the League Cup in a fourth round replay defeat at Southampton, prompting the dismissal of Atkinson on 4 November 1986 after more than five years in charge. Alex Ferguson was confirmed as Atkinson's successor within hours, recruited from Scottish side Aberdeen, where he had enjoyed considerable success in the previous seven years. Penalty Shootout (association Football)
In association football, a penalty shoot-out (previously known as kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) has expired. For example, in a FIFA World Cup, penalties are used in elimination matches; the round of 32, the round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, and the final. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different players; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. John Charles Bryan Barnes (born 7 November 1963) is a former professional football player and manager. Often considered one of the greatest England players of all time and one of Liverpool's greatest ever players, Barnes currently works as an author, as well as a commentator and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport.
