1986 FIFA World Cup Group A
Group A of the 1986 FIFA World Cup was one of six groups of national teams competing at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The group's first round of matches began on 31 May and its last matches were played on 10 June. Most matches were played at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City or at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla. Eventual champions Argentina topped the group, joined in the second round by 1982 champions Italy as well as Bulgaria. South Korea were making their first appearance in the tournament since 1954. 1986 FIFA World Cup
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June 1986. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format. Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to do so, and resigned in 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983, and became the first country to host the World Cup more than once, after previously hosting in 1970. The World Cup was won by Argentina (their second title, after winning in 1978). Argentina was captained by the 25-year-old Diego Maradona, who played a large part in his team's success by scoring his " Hand of God" goal, as well as another voted " Goal of the Century", in the same quarter-final against England. Georgi Georgiev Dimitrov (Bulgarian: Георги Георгиeв Димитров; 14 January 1959 – 8 May 2021) was a Bulgarian professional footballer who played as a centre-back. Andrey Zhelyazkov
Andrey Zhelyazkov ( bg, Андрей Желязков; born 9 July 1952 in Radnevo) is a former Bulgarian footballer who played as a forward. He spent 12 years of his career playing for Slavia Sofia and is the club's all-time top goalscorer in the A Group with 136 goals. Zhelyazkov is also the most capped player in the history of the club with 338 league appearances. He participated in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Career Zhelyazkov played in his home country for Minyor Radnevo and Slavia Sofia, in the Netherlands for Feyenoord, in France with RC Strasbourg, in Belgium for Beerschot, and for the Bulgaria national football team. Kostadin Stefanov Kostadinov ( bg, Костадин Стефанов Костадинов; born 25 June 1959) is a former Bulgarian footballer who played as a winger. Career During his career, he played for Trakia Plovdiv in Bulgaria and made 350 appearances in the Bulgarian championship, scoring 106 goals. Petar Atanasov Petrov ( bg, Пeтъp Aтaнacoв Пeтpoв; born 20 February 1961) is a Bulgarian former footballer who played as a left back. Club career Born in Virovsko, Petrov started playing for PFC Levski Sofia. During his spell with the club – renamed Vitosha Sofia in 1985 – he was first-choice in seven of nine seasons, winning three national championships and two Bulgarian Cups; he scored a career-best five goals in 29 games in 1984–85. Petrov was allowed to leave the Iron Curtain nation in 1989, at the age of 28, and signed with Portuguese team S.C. Beira-Mar. After four years, always in the Primeira Liga, he returned to his homeland and joined PFC Beroe Stara Zagora, retiring subsequently. Iliya Valov ( bg, Илия Вълов; born 29 December 1961 in Knezha) is a Bulgarian former football goalkeeper who played for Bulgaria. Career Valov made 180 appearances for Botev Vratsa from 1981 to 1988. He was the number two goalkeeper to Borislav Mihaylov in Bulgaria's squad at Mexico 86. He made a total of 31 caps with the national team. Stoycho Dimitrov Mladenov ( bg, Стойчо Димитpoв Младенов; born 12 April 1957 in Ploski, Blagoevgrad Province) is a Bulgarian former football player and manager. Career Mladenov started from small teams like Dimitrovgrad and gradually moved to bigger teams like CSKA Sofia. From there he went all around the world, however his best moments of winning were in Portugal and also with his National Team. His best years were spent as a striker for CSKA Sofia. He also served the club as a manager and head coach. Mladenov's nickname is "Liverpool's Executioner" in honor of his winning goals against the European champion Liverpool F.C. in UEFA European Champions Cup 1/4 finals in season 81/82. Bojidar Georgiev Iskrenov ( bg, Божидар Гeopгиeв Искренов, born 1 August 1962), nicknamed Gibona (Гибона means "The Gibbon"), Gibi (Гиби) and The Joy of the People (Радостта на народа), is a former Bulgarian footballer who spent most of his career playing for Levski Sofia as a forward. Iskrenov also had a brief film career. He appeared in the movie '' Manevri na petiya etazh'' as the elevator technician. Radoslav Metodiev Zdravkov ( bg, Радослав Meтoдиeв Здравков; born 30 July 1956) is a Bulgarian retired footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. Club career Zdravkov was born in Sofia. During his professional career, which spanned nearly 20 years, he represented Lokomotiv Sofia, CSKA Sofia, Portugal's G.D. Chaves, S.C. Braga, F.C. Paços de Ferreira and F.C. Felgueiras – after he had left the Iron Curtain at the age of 30 – FC Yantra and PFC Litex Lovech. Ayan Faikov Sadakov ( bg, Аян Фаиков Садъков) (26 September 1961 – 1 July 2017) was a Bulgarian footballer and a key member of the Bulgarian national team in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Club career Sadakov began his club career at the local Lokomotiv Plovdiv. For "The Smurfs" he played eleven seasons, before transferring to Portugal's C.F. Os Belenenses in 1989. Two years later he return in Lokomotiv and played two years, before signed with Botev Plovdiv in summer 1994. International Sadakov made 80 appearances for Bulgaria, between 1981 and 1991 and scored 9 goals. He played in four matches for his country at 1986 FIFA World Cup. Coaching career Sadakov had been appointed on September 29, 2008 as a manager of Lokomotiv Plovdiv a second time to replace Dragan Kanatlarovski. Zhivko Gospodinov Hristov ( bg, Живко Господинов Христов; 6 September 1957 – 4 May 2015) was a Bulgarian footballer. Gospodinov was an attacking midfielder and playmaker.
