Iosif Shklovsky
Iosif Samuilovich Shklovsky (sometimes transliterated ''Josif, Josif, Shklovskii, Shklovskij''; ; 1 July 1916 – 3 March 1985) was a Soviet astronomer and astrophysicist. He is remembered for his work in theoretical astrophysics and other topics, as well as for his 1962 book on extraterrestrial life, the revised and expanded version of which was co-authored by American astronomer Carl Sagan in 1966 as ''Intelligent Life in the Universe''. He won the Lenin Prize in 1960 and the Bruce Medal in 1972. Asteroid 2849 Shklovskij and the crater Shklovsky (on the Martian moon Phobos) are named in his honor. He was a Corresponding Member of Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1966. Nigol Andresen (pen name, Ormi Arp; 2 October 1899 Haljala Parish, Wierland County – 24 February 1985 Tartu) was an Estonian and Soviet Union, Soviet politician, writer, literary critic, and translator. He was a member of V Riigikogu. He carried out undeground communist activity in 1939 and 1940. In 1940 he was the minister of foreign affairs in the puppet government headed by Vares Government of Estonia, Johannes Vares' cabinet. He fell into disgrace during a purge of the Estonian Communist Party in 1949. Andresen's translations included an Estonian-language version of Karl Marx's ''Das Kapital''. However, it was removed from bookstores and libraries when it was deemed to not agree with the approved Soviet version of the work. Mikhail Gromov (aviator)
Mikhail Mikhailovich Gromov (; – 22 January 1985) was a Russian and Soviet military aviator, test pilot, and Hero of the Soviet Union. Early life Gromov's father, Mikhail Konstantinovich Gromov, was of noble intelligentsia and served as military medic. His mother, Lyubov Ignatyevna Andreeva, was from peasant family and received training as an obstetrician. Gromov spent his childhood in Kaluga, Rzhev, Myza-Raevo (near Moscow). He graduated from Voskresensky Real School in Moscow, and went on to study at the IMTS from 1916 to 1917. In 1917, Gromov graduated from aviation theoretical courses at IMTS and started his army service. Evgeny Vladimirovich Alekseev (; born 28 November 1985) is a Russian chess grandmaster and Russian champion in 2006. He competed in the FIDE World Chess Championship 2004 and the FIDE World Cup in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. Career He won the gold medal in chess at the 2001 Maccabiah Games. In 2006 Alekseev won the Russian Championship Superfinal after defeating Dmitry Jakovenko in a playoff match. By winning the 2007 Aeroflot Open in Moscow, Alekseev qualified for the 2007 Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting.
