1984–85 Nationalliga A
Statistics of the Swiss Super League, Swiss National League in the 1984–85 football season, both Nationalliga A and Nationalliga B. This was the 88th season of top-tier and the 87th season of second-tier football in Switzerland. Overview There were 32 member clubs in the Swiss Football Association, Swiss Football Association (ASF/SFV), divided into two tiers of 16 teams each. The top tier was named Nationalliga A (NLA) and the second tier was named Nationalliga B (NLB). In both divisions the teams played a double Round-robin tournament, round-robin to decide their table positions. The Swiss champions would qualify for the 1985–86 European Cup, the runners-up and third placed team would qualify for the 1985–86 UEFA Cup. The last two placed teams in the NLA were relegated to the NLB for the following season. The top two placed teams in the NLB would be promoted to the top tier. Grasshopper Club Zurich (GCZ), commonly referred to as Grasshopper Club or simply just GC, is a professional sports club, multisports club based in Zürich, Zurich, Switzerland. 1985–86 UEFA Cup
The 1985–86 UEFA Cup was the 15th season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The final was played over two legs at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Madrid, Spain, and at the Olympiastadion, West Berlin, West Germany. For the second year in a row, the competition was won by Real Madrid of Spain, who defeated Köln of West Germany by an aggregate result of 5–3. Real Madrid became the first club to successfully defend the UEFA Cup, a feat that would only be repeated by Sevilla in two different occasions during the 21st century, both in the UEFA Cup (2006 and 2007) and its successor UEFA Europa League (2014 and 2015). 1985–86 European Cup Winners' Cup
The 1985–86 European Cup Winners' Cup was won by Dynamo Kyiv in the final against Atlético Madrid. It was their second title in the competition, and first since 1975. Reigning champions Everton, who initially qualified for the European Cup instead as the 1984–85 Football League champions, and 1985 FA Cup winners Manchester United missed out on European football due to the newly enacted five-year ban on English clubs participating in Europe, following the Heysel Stadium disaster on 29 May 1985. 1985–86 European Cup
The 1985–86 European Cup was the 31st season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football competition. The European Champion Clubs' Cup was won by Steaua București on penalties in the final against Barcelona. Steaua București became the first Eastern Bloc side to win the tournament. The final was decided mainly by goalkeeper Helmut Duckadam, who (after keeping a clean sheet in the final) saved all four of Barcelona's penalties to secure the cup. Juventus, the defending champions, were eliminated by Barcelona in the quarter-finals. No clubs from England were entered into the competition during this year, owing to a ban from European competition in light of the Heysel Stadium disaster. FC Winterthur
FC Winterthur is a Swiss football club based in Winterthur, Canton of Zürich. They play in the Swiss Super League, the first tier of Swiss football, and appeared regularly in the Nationalliga A during the 20th century. Their home is the Stadion Schützenwiese. History The club was founded in 1896 by students of the local school of engineering and following a fusion with two local teams, it was called ''Vereinigte Fussballclubs Winterthur'' between 1929 and 1946. FC Wettingen
FC Wettingen was a Swiss football club from Wettingen, Switzerland. It was founded in 1931, but due to financial problems they went bankrupt in 1993. In the same year it was refounded as ''FC Wettingen 93''. In the 2012/13 season, the name was changed back to ''FC Wettingen''. They play their home games at Stadion Altenburg. History FC Wettingen spent the first few decades of their life bobbing around the lower echelons of the Swiss leagues until finally in 1969 they made it to the National League B.
