1984–85 UCLA Bruins Men's Basketball Team
The 1984–85 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team represented the University of California, Los Angeles. The Bruins received their first invitation to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in school history. The team went and defeated the Indiana Hoosiers in the final; Reggie Miller was named the tournament's most valuable player. Walt Hazzard began his first season as head coach of UCLA after replacing Larry Farmer. The team included a core of seniors in center Brad Wright, power forward Gary Maloncon, and point guard Nigel Miguel. Miguel was a defensive stopper, and assigned to the opponents' best scorer. He was the only Bruin named to the all-conference team in the Pacific-10, and he was also the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Walt Hazzard
Mahdi Abdul-Rahman (born Walter Raphael Hazzard Jr.; April 15, 1942 – November 18, 2011) was an American professional basketball player and college basketball coach. He played in college for the UCLA Bruins and was a member of their first national championship team in 1964. He also won a gold medal that year with the US national team at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Hazzard began his pro career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected him a territorial pick in the 1964 NBA draft. He was named an NBA All-Star with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1968. After his playing career ended, he was the head coach at UCLA during the 1980s. College career Hazzard attended Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, where his teams went 89–3 and he was named the city's player of the year when he was a senior. Point Guard
The point guard (PG), also called the one or the point, is one of the Basketball positions, five positions in a regulation basketball game. A point guard has perhaps the most specialized role of any position and is usually the shortest player on the court. Point guards are expected to control the pace of the game. They effectively "run" the team's offense by controlling the ball and making sure that it gets to the right player at the right time. The 1984–85 Idaho Vandals men's basketball team represented the University of Idaho during the 1984–85 NCAA Division I men's basketball season.
