The 1984–85 season was Cardiff City F.C.'s 58th season in the The Football League, Football League. They competed in the 22-team Football League Second Division, Division Two, then the second tier of Football in England, English football, finishing twenty-first, suffering relegation to Football League Third Division, Division Three. The season also saw the retirement of Phil Dwyer, whose 13-year spell at the club saw him become the record appearance holder. David Felgate (footballer)
David Felgate (born 4 March 1960) is a Welsh former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Due to his stature, many supporters affectionately nicknamed him "the fat goalie". Felgate had a long professional career from 1978 to 1995, making a total of 612 Football League appearances. Of the league appearances, 238 came with Bolton Wanderers and he also turned out for league sides Rochdale, Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City, Grimsby Town, Cardiff City, Chester City, and Wigan Athletic. He also had spells with Bury and Wolverhampton Wanderers without making any league appearances for these clubs, and Felgate later continued to play non-league football for clubs including Leigh RMI, Hyde United, and Bacup Borough until he was in his mid-40s. Brian Flynn (footballer)
Brian Flynn (born 12 October 1955) is a Welsh former association football, footballer and Manager (association football), manager. As a player, he was a Wales national football team, Welsh international, who played as a midfielder. Flynn managed the Wales national under-21 football team until May 2012, coming close to taking Wales to their first major championship in 57 years. On 13 September 2010, Flynn was confirmed caretaker manager of the Wales national football team after John Toshack stepped down, prior to the appointment of Gary Speed. Karl Elsey
Karl William Elsey (born 20 November 1958) is a Welsh former professional footballer. His clubs included Swansea City, Queens Park Rangers, Newport County, Cardiff City, Gillingham, Reading and Maidstone United. In total he made over 450 Football League appearances. Career Elsey joined Pembroke Borough from local amateur football and had a brief spell with Swansea City in the 1978–79 season before returning to Pembroke Borough. He signed for Queens Park Rangers in January 1979, but failed to establish himself. Elsey moved to Newport County in July 1980, during the most successful period in the club's history. Jimmy Mullen (footballer Born 1952)
James Mullen (born 8 November 1952 in Jarrow, County Durham) is an English football manager who last managed at Market Drayton Town. He twice won promotion with Burnley, in 1991–92 and 1993–94. Playing career In his playing days, Mullen spent most of his career at Sheffield Wednesday, and was their captain when they won promotion from Division Three in 1979/80. The following season, however, he went one better with Rotherham, captaining the Millers to the Division Three title. After a short loan spell at Preston, he moved to Cardiff, where he again won promotion in 1982/83. Following the resignation of Cardiff manager Len Ashurst in March 1984, Mullen and Assistant Manager Jimmy Goodfellow were appointed joint Caretaker Managers until the end of the 1983/84 season. Jake King (footballer)
Jake King (born 29 January 1955) is a Scottish football manager and former professional player. Career Playing career King, who played as a full back, began as an apprentice with Shrewsbury Town, before making his professional debut in 1971. King made a total of 306 appearances in the Football League for Shrewsbury, scoring 20 goals, before leaving in 1982 to join Wrexham. At Wrexham, King made 92 League appearances, scoring 5 goals. On 3 October 1984, away to FC Porto in the first round of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, he scored twice in the first half of a 4–3 away defeat as Wrexham beat the Portuguese on the away goals rule. David Grant (born 2 June 1960) is an English former professional football left-back. He played in the Football League, primarily for Sheffield Wednesday and Rochdale. Born in Sheffield, Grant became an apprentice with Sheffield Wednesday in July 1976, turning professional in February 1978. He progressed to their first team, playing over 100 times. He moved to Oxford United in 1982. Out of favour during the 1983–84 season, Grant had a spell on loan with Chesterfield before joining Cardiff City. Mike Ford (footballer)
Michael Paul Ford (born 9 February 1966) is an English football manager and former professional player. His father, Tony Ford, is also a former professional footballer. Playing career Ford began his career at Leicester City where he became a full-time professional at the age of 18. He was released by the club without making an appearance and moved to non-league side Devizes Town but he was signed a few months later by Cardiff City and quickly made his debut in a 1–1 draw with Leeds United. A mainstay in the side, Ford played in numerous positions for Cardiff in defence and midfield and helped them to promotion in his final year at the club. Paul Bodin
Paul John Bodin (born 13 September 1964) is a Welsh former professional footballer and coach who is the coach of the Wales under-21 team. His son, Billy Bodin, is also a professional footballer. A former Chelsea youth team product, he moved to Cardiff City via Newport County in 1982. He helped Cardiff to win promotion out of the Third Division in 1982–83. He returned to non-League football with Merthyr Tydfil and Bath City in 1985 before rejoining Newport for a £15,000 fee in January 1988.
