1984 US Open – Men's Singles
John McEnroe defeated Ivan Lendl in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1984 US Open. It was his fourth US Open (tennis), US Open singles title and seventh and last Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major singles title overall. It was Lendl's third consecutive runner-up finish at the US Open. Jimmy Connors was the two-time defending champion, but was defeated by McEnroe in the semifinals, in the last match between Connors–McEnroe rivalry, the pair at a major singles tournament. John McEnroe
John Patrick McEnroe Jr. (born February 16, 1959) is an American former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in men's List of ATP number 1 ranked singles players, singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for 170 weeks, and as world No. 1 in men's List of ATP number 1 ranked doubles players, doubles for 269 weeks (List of ATP number 1 ranked doubles players#Weeks at No. 1, third-most of all time). Patrick Hart Cash (born 27 May 1965) is an Australian former professional tennis player and coach. He reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 4 in May 1988 and a career-high ATP doubles ranking of world No. 6 in August 1988. Upon winning the 1987 singles title at Wimbledon, Cash climbed into the stands to celebrate, starting a tradition that has continued ever since. Mel Purcell
Mel Purcell (born July 18, 1959) is a former professional tennis player and coach from the U.S. His career-high singles ranking was world No. 21, achieved in November 1980. Purcell's finest moment was when he reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1983. He was head coach of the Murray State University men's tennis team from 1996 to 2016. Larry Stefanki (born July 23, 1957), is an American tennis coach and former professional tennis player. Tennis career He played for nine years starting in 1979, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 35 in singles after winning the Indian Wells Masters at La Quinta in 1985 as well as three in doubles. He is one of three Stefanki brothers to have played on the varsity tennis team at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 until 1979 under coach Bill Wright. Matthew Doyle (1954 or 1955 – 8 February 2025) was an American-Irish professional tour tennis player. His best result was reaching the fourth round of the US Open in 1982. He was also a long-time Irish Davis Cup player. After retiring from playing, he was Ireland's coach for several years. Early life and education Matthew Doyle was born in California in 1954 or 1955. Kevin Melvyn Curren (born 2 March 1958) is a South African former professional tennis player. He played in two Grand Slam singles finals and won four Grand Slam doubles titles, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 in July 1985. Jan Stefan Edberg (; born 19 January 1966) is a Swedish former professional tennis player. He was ranked as the world No. 1 in both men's singles and men's doubles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), one of two players in the Open Era to hold both positions (alongside John McEnroe).
