1983 Spanish Floods
The 1983 Spanish floods were a natural disaster that occurred between 26 and 27 August 1983 in northern Spain, particularly in the Biscay region, where the Aste Nagusia – the Bilbao city festival – had been taking place. The flood resulted in significant damage to property and caused the deaths of 34 people, with another five unaccounted for. The flood led to preventive measures being put in place and the redevelopment of Bilbao's riverside. Background Prior to the 1983 flood, the Biscay region had experienced at least 42 floods since 1403, though none of the recent ones had resulted in fatalities. 2024 Spanish Floods
On 29 October 2024, torrential rain caused by an cut-off low, isolated low-pressure area at high levels brought over a year's worth of precipitation to several areas in eastern Spain, including the Valencian Community, Castilla–La Mancha, and Andalusia. The resulting floodwaters caused the deaths of about 232 people, with three more missing and substantial property damage. It is one of the deadliest natural disasters in Spanish history. Though similar torrential rain events had happened in the past in the region, the flooding was more intense, likely due to the effects of climate change. The poor preparation and disaster response of the Autonomous communities of Spain, regional and national governments also likely aggravated the human cost of the event, notably in Valencian Community, Valencia. Ibaizabal
The Ibaizabal (''wide river'' in Basque) is a river that drains southeastern Biscay to the Estuary of Bilbao. It is long from its source at Elorrio to the Nervión, and it passes by the towns of Durango and Amorebieta and joins the Nervión river at Basauri. Both rivers run then together for a short length until they merge with the sea at Bilbao. It is disputed which river is the one that actually reaches Bilbao. It is commonly agreed that it is the Nervión, but there are some who argue that the Ibaizabal carries more water.
