1981 Vuelta A España
The 36th Edition ''Vuelta a España'' (Tour of Spain), a long-distance Bicycle racing, bicycle Stage (bicycle race), stage race and one of the three Grand Tour (cycling), grand tours, was held from 21 April to 10 May 1981. It consisted of 19 stages covering a total of , and was won by Giovanni Battaglin of the cycling team. Regis Clere won the prologue of the race and kept the leader's jersey until the mountain time trial where on the very long climb to Sierra Nevada, Giovanni Battaglin won the stage and took over the leader's jersey. The only threat to Battaglin's lead was Pedro Muñoz. The entire Teka team withdrew from the race withdrawing potential favourites Marino Lejarreta and Alberto Fernández. Battaglin and his Inoxpran team withstood the challenge from the Spanish and brought Battaglin to his first grand tour victory. Giovanni Battaglin
Giovanni Battaglin (born 22 July 1951) is an Italian professional road racing cyclist. The highlight of his career was his overall win in the 1981 Giro d'Italia and the 1981 Vuelta a España. Early years Battaglin was born in Marostica, province of Vicenza. Battaglin won the 1972 Amateur Giro d'Italia and turned professional the following year with the Jollj Ceramica team. Professional career The 1973 Giro d'Italia that began in Verviers in Belgium and was Battaglin's debut in a grand tour. Battaglin immediately showed promise when he finished third on stage four ahead of Eddy Merckx and José Manuel Fuente. By halfway through the race, Battaglin was sitting in second place overall behind Merckx but lost that placing to Felice Gimondi. Still at the age of 21, the neo-pro astonished the cycling world by finishing third in the race. Régis Clère
Régis Clère (15 August 1956 – 9 June 2012) was a French professional road bicycle racer. Clère was born in Langres. During his career, he won three stages in the Tour de France. He won one of these stages, in the 1987 Tour de France, after he was almost eliminated after finishing outside the time limit in the previous stage, but the Tour de France jury allowed him to continue the race. In 1981, he won two stages of the Vuelta a España, and the French National Road Race Championships the following year. He also competed in the Cycling at the 1980 Summer Olympics – Men's individual road race, individual road race event at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Clère died, aged 55, in Dijon during a surgical procedure. Écija () is a city and municipality of Spain belonging to the province of Seville, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is in the countryside, 85 km east of the city of Seville. Jos Lammertink
Jos Lammertink (28 March 1958 – 24 November 2024) was a Dutch road bicycle racer. He won the Dutch title in the Dutch National Road Race Championship, men's road race in 1986. That same year he was involved in a crash during stage four of the Tour de France that forced him to abandon, suffering from a fracture on his left front skull. Lammertink died from respiratory failure on 24 November 2024, at the age of 66.
