1979–80 Wigan Athletic F.C. Season
The 1979–80 season was the 42nd season in the history of Wigan Athletic F.C. and their second as a professional club in the Football League. The club finished the season in 6th place. In the FA Cup, the club achieved an away victory against Second Division side Chelsea, reaching the Fourth Round for the first time in their history before being knocked out by Everton. The club did not progress beyond the first round in the League Cup. Peter Houghton was the team's top goalscorer with a total of 15 league goals (16 in all competitions). Wigan Athletic F
Wigan ( ) is a town in Greater Manchester, England. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west. It is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and is its administrative centre. The town has a population of 107,732 and the wider borough of 330,714. Wigan is part of the historic county of Lancashire. Wigan was in the territory of the Brigantes, an ancient Celtic tribe that ruled much of what is now Northern England. The Brigantes were subjugated in the Roman conquest of Britain and the Roman settlement of was established where Wigan lies. Wigan was incorporated as a borough in 1246, following the issue of a charter by King Henry III of England. Ian McNeill
John McKeand "Ian" McNeill (24 February 1932 – 6 October 2017) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager. Playing at inside forward, McNeill started his career at Aberdeen, making his first team debut in January 1951. McNeill moved to England in 1956, and went on to play for Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southend United. He returned to Scotland to join Ross County, then a Highland League club, initially as a player before taking over as manager the following season. He led the club to their first ever Highland League Championship in 1967. He then became manager of Wigan Athletic, then a Northern Premier League club, in 1968. McNeill then managed Salisbury in the Southern League, before returning for a second spell at Ross County in 1971. Football League Division Four
The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Following the creation of the Premier League, the fourth tier of English football was renamed the Football League Third Division, before being rebranded as Football League Two in 2004. Peter Houghton (footballer)
Peter Houghton (born 30 November 1954) is an English former footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for four clubs from 1978 to 1988. Playing career A forward, Houghton made his breakthrough into professional football at 23 when Wigan Athletic were elected to The Football League in 1978. He had joined the Latics a few months earlier from South Liverpool, after an earlier spell with Prescot Town where he won a Mid–Cheshire League championship. He had the honour of scoring Wigan's final goal as a non–league club against Matlock Town and helped them win the Lancashire Junior Cup against Chorley. He finished the 1977–78 season with nine goals in 17 league appearances. Houghton had a goal disallowed on his Football League debut against Hereford United, but ended the season with 13 league goals to his name. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, it is the oldest football league in the world, and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The Football League Second Division was the second level division in the English football league system between 1892 and 1992.
