The 1979 Swedish speedway season was the 1979 season of motorcycle speedway in Sweden. Individual Individual Championship The 1979 Swedish Individual Speedway Championship final was held on 25 August in Kumla. Jan Andersson won the Swedish Championship. Junior Championship Winner - Lars Rosberg Team Team Championship Getingarna won division 1 and were declared the winners of the Swedish Speedway Team Championship for the tenth time. The team included Richard Hellsén, Anders Michanek and Tommy Nilsson. Skepparna won the second division, while Eldarna and Solkatterna won the third division east and west respectively. Individual Individual Championship The 1978 Swedish Individual Speedway Championship final was held on 26 August at the Snälltorpet in Eskilstuna. Anders Michanek won the Swedish Championship for the fourth time. Junior Championship Winner - Lennart Bengtsson Team Team Championship Getingarna won division 1 and were declared the winners of the Swedish Speedway Team Championship for the ninth time. The team included the riders Anders Michanek, Tommy Nilsson and Richard Hellsén. The team name for Stjärnorna (The Stars) was changed to Rospiggarna. Lejonen won the second division, while Pilarna and Filbyterna won the third division north and south respectively. Tommy Johansson (born 21 October 1950) is a former speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Johansson is a former champion of Sweden, winning the Swedish Championship in 1973. He reached the final of the Speedway World Championship during the 1974 Individual Speedway World Championship and the final of the 1971 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1971 until 1975, riding for various clubs. Vargarna are a Swedish motorcycle speedway team based in Norrköping, Sweden. The team race at the Norrköpings Motorstadion. Njudungarna
Vetlanda Speedway were a motorcycle speedway team based in Vetlanda, Sweden. Earlier known as Njudungarna and VMS Elit, the club was formed in 1946, and arranged their first meeting three years later. In 2003 when the club was promoted to the top division of Swedish speedway league, the Elitserien, they changed the name of club to VMS Elit. The current name Vetlanda Speedway was adopted in 2018. The Swedish Speedway Team Championship is the team championship of speedway in Sweden. Season by season History The Championship was introduced in 1950. In 1982 the Championship was renamed with a new league called the Elitserien being introduced. previously the highest league had been known as the Allsvenskan but since 1982 it has been the second tier of Swedish speedway. Between 1986 and 1999 the team that finished top of the league were declared champions because there was no play off. Christer Sjösten
Christer Sjösten (2 September 1948 – 9 December 1979) was an international speedway rider from Sweden. Speedway career Sjösten was a four time Swedish finalist in 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1977. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1971 to 1979, riding for various clubs. He died at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in Australia on 9 December 1979, following a serious accident at the Brisbane Exhibition Speedway during a tournament 8 days earlier. Following his death his older brother Sören Sjösten (one of the world's leading riders) retired.
