Tower Hamlets London Borough Council, also known as Tower Hamlets Council, is the local authority for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in London. The council has been under the control of local party Aspire (political party), Aspire since 2022. It has been led by a Directly elected mayors in England, directly elected mayor since 2010. The council is based at Tower Hamlets Town Hall on Whitechapel Road. Greater London Council
The Greater London Council (GLC) was the top-tier local government administrative body for Greater London from 1965 to 1986. It replaced the earlier London County Council (LCC) which had covered a much smaller area. The GLC was dissolved in 1986 by the Local Government Act 1985 and its powers were devolved to the London boroughs and other entities. A new administrative body, known as the Greater London Authority (GLA), was established in 2000. Background In 1957 a Royal Commission on Local Government in Greater London had been set up under Edwin Herbert, Baron Tangley, Sir Edwin Herbert to consider the local government arrangements in the London area. Anita Halpin
Anita E. Halpin (born April 1944) is an English communist and trade union activist of German-Jewish descent who has been successful in having paintings returned to her that were looted by the Nazis from her grandfather, Alfred Hess, in the 1930s. Several works, such as ''Berlin Street Scene'' (1913) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and ''Nude'' by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, have been returned to her and subsequently sold; the former sold at auction for £20.5 million to the Neue Galerie New York, which also paid over £1 million to Halpin for ''Nude''. Early life and family Anita E. Hess was born in April 1944, in New End Hospital, Hampstead, London. Her father was Hans Hess, assistant curator at the former Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, who emigrated to England in 1933 via a Canadian internment camp. Max Levitas
Max Samuel Levitas (1 June 1915 – 2 November 2018) was an Ireland-born British communist activist and councillor, prominent in the East End of London for many years. The brother of communist activist Maurice Levitas, Max Levitas was a member of the Young Communist League and later the Communist Party of Great Britain. As part of his involvement in politics, in opposition to the British Union of Fascists, Levitas was involved in political violence as part of the Cable Street riot with the Metropolitan Police. As part of his involvement with the CPGB, he was a councillor on Stepney Borough Council and then Tower Hamlets London Borough Council during the 1940s. When division grew within the CPGB over Eurocommunism in the late 1980s, he joined the re-established Communist Party of Britain.
