1977–78 Brentford F.C. Season
During the 1977–78 English football season, Brentford competed in the Football League Fourth Division. 58 goals from Steve Phillips and Andrew McCulloch helped the club to a 4th-place finish and promotion to the Third Division. Phillips' 36 goals was the most in English league football by any player during the season. Brentford F
Brentford is a suburban town in West London, England and part of the London Borough of Hounslow. It lies at the confluence of the River Brent and the Thames, west of Charing Cross. John Docherty (footballer, Born 1940)
John Docherty (29 April 1940 – 4 December 2024) was a Scottish football player and manager. Managerial career Having previously been manager of Cambridge United between January 1978 and 13 December 1983 and Brentford, and briefly coaching at St Clement Danes School after leaving Brentford, his spell at Cambridge United saw the club in the Second Division where they managed respectable finishes, with eighth in 1979–80 being their highest. The following season saw the side as outside contenders for promotion before a late slump saw them finish 13th. He was appointed Millwall manager in May 1986 following the departure of George Graham to Arsenal. In his second season as manager, he guided them to the Second Division title and gained Millwall their first top division campaign. John Fraser (footballer, Born 1953)
John Fraser (born 12 July 1953) is an English former footballer who played as a full back in the Football League for Brentford and Fulham. Career Fulham After being spotted playing for his school team, Fraser entered the youth system at First Division club Fulham at the age of 14 in 1967. He began his career as a midfielder, but switched to full back under reserve team manager George Cohen and signed his first professional contract in 1971. He made his senior debut during the 1971–72 Second Division season and gradually built on his appearance record year-by-year to play 25 games during the 1974–75 season. Dave Carlton
David George Carlton (born 24 November 1952) is an English retired professional footballer who made 320 appearances as a midfielder in the Football League, most notably for Northampton Town and Brentford. Playing career Early years Carlton began his career as an apprentice at West Ham United and moved to Fulham in 1969. He made his debut during the 1971–72 Second Division season and made eight appearances in total. Gordon Sweetzer
Gordon Eric Peter Sweetzer (born 27 January 1957) is a Canadian former professional soccer player who played as a forward. In a short, injury-plagued career, he played in the Football League for Brentford, Cambridge United and in the North American Soccer League for Toronto Blizzard and Edmonton Drillers. Sweetzer won three caps for Canada and later became a manager and coach. As a player, he was described as "an aggressive, all-action, bustling striker, with little finesse about his game". William Valentine Graham (born 14 February 1959) is a Northern Irish retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder in the Football League for Brentford. Career Brentford After spells at Northampton Town and Stewarts & Lloyds Corby, Graham signed on trial for Fourth Division club Brentford in August 1977. He quickly established himself in the first team, signing a professional contract and making 32 appearances and scoring two goals during the 1977–78 season, helping the Bees to a fourth-place finish and promotion to the Third Division. Despite signing a new long-term contract, Graham's appearances tailed off in the Third Division and he departed the club in February 1981, having made 51 appearances and scored three goals for the Bees. Barry Lloyd
Barry David Lloyd (19 February 1949 – September 2024) was an English professional footballer and manager. As a player, he most notably played as a midfielder in the Football League for Fulham, for whom he was captain and made over 280 appearances for the club. He also played League football for Brentford, Hereford United and Chelsea. After his retirement as a player, Lloyd managed Brighton & Hove Albion and non-League clubs Worthing and Yeovil Town. Len Bond
Len Bond (born 2 December 1954) is an English former professional football goalkeeper. He made more than 300 appearances in the Football League, including 168 for Exeter City and 122 for Brentford. Career Bond was born in Ilminster, Somerset. He began his career as an apprentice with Bristol City, turning professional in September 1971, although he had made his league debut on the last day of the previous season. He remained at Ashton Gate for a further six years, most of which was spent as deputy to John Shaw or Ray Cashley. In November 1974 he was loaned to Exeter City, playing 30 league games.
