1975 CFL Season
The 1975 CFL season is considered to be the 22nd season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 18th Canadian Football League season. CFL News in 1975 Calgary became the first city in the Canadian Prairie Provinces to host the Grey Cup championship game. The CFL changed the rules on blocking by allowing contact to be above waist level on punt returns. The two-point convert was introduced to the league, as was the option after a field goal attempt by one team (regardless of whether it was made or not) to let the opposing team either kick off or scrimmage from their own 35-yard line (the latter option was eliminated in 2009, but was reinstated the next year). Tragedy struck the CFL on October 11, when Hamilton Tiger-Cats star defensive lineman Tom Pate suffered an aneurysm in the fourth quarter against the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. Montreal Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes (Canadian French, French: ''Les Alouettes de Montréal'') are a professional Canadian football team based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1946, the team has disbanded twice and been re-established thrice. Tom Pate Memorial Award, selected annually by the Canadian Football League Players' Association, is awarded to a player with outstanding sportsmanship and someone who has made a significant contribution to his team, his community and Association. Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian
The Dick Suderman Trophy () for the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian is awarded annually to the Canadian player deemed to have the best performance in the Grey Cup game, the championship of the Canadian Football League. This award is presented before the Grey Cup trophy is presented. The winner does not necessarily have to play for the Grey Cup winning team in order to qualify. The award was introduced at the 1971 Grey Cup, and the first winner was Dick Suderman, a Canadian defensive end. A year later, just six weeks before the playing of the 1972 Grey Cup, Suderman collapsed and died from a brain hemorrhage after playing a regular season game; the trophy was subsequently renamed in his honour. Dave Cutler (Canadian Football)
David Robert Stuart Cutler (born October 17, 1945) is a former all-star place kicker with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Cutler is considered by many to be the best field goal kicker in CFL history. CFL A graduate of Simon Fraser University, and playing his entire 16-year career with the Eskimos, Cutler is the team's all time point scorer, with 2237. He was an all star 4 times and was a member of 6 Grey Cup winning teams, including being an essential part of their great 5 win (1978–1982) dynasty. One of his most memorable plays occurred with only seconds remaining in the 69th Grey Cup game of 1981 against Ottawa, where his field goal was not only game winning, but dynasty extending. Lewis Cook (Canadian Football)
Lewis E. Cook (born December 5, 1946) is a former award-winning defensive back in the Canadian Football League. A graduate of University of Idaho, Cook came to Canada to play professional football, having a well traveled career. He began with the Montreal Alouettes, playing 3 games in 1970 (and 21 total regular season games for the Larks) He then moved to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1972 for 2 seasons, his best being his first when he intercepted 6 passes and returned one for a touchdown. He then played one season in the short lived World Football League with the Detroit Wheels. He again played for the Montreal Alouettes in 1975, returning a punt 98 yards for a TD and winning the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player award in a losing cause against the Edmonton Eskimos. Steve Ferrughelli
Stephen Ferrughelli (March 12, 1949 – June 25, 2016) was an American professional football player who was a fullback in the Canadian Football League (CFL). A graduate of Rutgers University, Ferrughelli had overcome difficult childhood handicaps (speech and hearing impairments) to earn his education and football scholarship. Ferrughelli would have a brief stint in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and Washington Redskins before a knee injury led to him being cut. He subsequently moved to the Canadian Football League. He joined Montreal in 1973 but made a huge impact the next season, rushing for 1124 yards, being named an all-star, and winning the Grey Cup. Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded on September 19, 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. CFL East Division
The East Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League, its counterpart being the West Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the East Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The four teams in the division are the Toronto Argonauts, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, and Ottawa Redblacks.
