Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of kilometres ( 26 mi 385 yd), usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. More than 800 marathons are held worldwide each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants. A creation of the French philologist Michel Bréal inspired by a story from Ancient Greece, the marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896 in Athens. The distance did not become standardized until 1921. The distance is also included in the World Athletics Championships, which began in 1983. It is the only running road race included in both championship competitions (walking races on the roads are also contested in both). Bob Sercombe (athlete)
Robert Charles Grant Sercombe (3 April 1949 – 12 January 2025) was an Australian politician who represented the Division of Maribyrnong, Victoria for the Australian Labor Party from March 1996 until his retirement at the 2007 federal election. Life and career Sercombe was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and was educated at the University of Melbourne. He was a public servant, social planner, and administrator before entering politics. He was an adviser to Clyde Holding, a former Victorian opposition leader and a minister in the Hawke government from 1983 until 1988. Karel Lismont (, ; born 8 March 1949) is a former Belgian long-distance runner. He competed at the 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 Olympics in the marathon and 10,000 m events. He won two marathon medals: a silver in 1972 and a bronze in 1976, finishing ninth and twenty-fourth in 1980 and 1984, respectively; he was less successful in the 10,000 m, finishing eleventh in 1976 and failing to reach the final in 1972. Günter Mielke (30 November 1942 – 18 January 2010) was a West Germany, West German long-distance runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres and marathon. He was born in Berlin. He won the West German championships in marathon in 1975 and 1977 and won silver medals in 10,000 metres in 1971, 1972 and 1974. He represented several clubs, including ASV Köln, TV Wattenscheid, OSC Berlin, VfL Wolfsburg and LG Neckar-Odenwald. He also won the 1977 Berlin Marathon. Internationally he competed in 10,000 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics without finishing the race, and finished 54th in the Athletics at the 1976 Summer Olympics – Men's Marathon, 1976 Olympic marathon.
