Bernd Herrmann (born 22 November 1951) was a West German athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres. Eckhard Lesse
Eckhard Lesse (born 1 December 1948) is a German former long-distance runner. Lesse represented East Germany at the 1972 Summer Olympics and won silver in men's marathon at the 1974 European Championships. Career Lesse represented East Germany at the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki, placing 24th in the 10,000 m. Lesse broke the East German marathon record for the first time in April 1972, running 2:13:19.4 in Karl-Marx-Stadt; he was the only East German selected for the 1972 Olympic marathon, where he placed 25th in 2:22:49.6. Lesse broke the national record again in Manchester in June 1973, running 2:12:24. Ian Reginald Thompson (born 16 October 1949) is an English former long-distance runner, who gained success in marathon running. His Commonwealth Games marathon record set in 1974 remains unbeaten. He also appeared at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Biography Early career Born in the town of Birkenhead, Cheshire (now Merseyside), Ian Thompson's family moved to Luton, where he ran for his school, Luton Grammar School. Thompson was regarded as just an ordinary club athlete and ranked 90th in Britain's 5,000 metres list at the time, but suddenly broke through to world class as a marathon runner when asked to make up the numbers for his club, Luton United, in the Amateur Athletic Association of England (AAA) 1973 AAA Championships on 27 October 1973. Anthony Derrick Simmons (born 6 October 1948) is a male former athlete from Wales, who competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Biography Simmons finished second behind Dave Bedford in the 10,000 metres event at the 1973 AAA Championships, which was a race where Bedford broke the world record. Simmons represented England in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games, in Christchurch, New Zealand finishing seventh in the 10,000 metres. He won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1974 European Athletics Championships, finishing 4 hundredths of a second behind the gold medallist. At the 1976 Summer Olympics he qualified for the final of the 10,000 metres, finishing 4th. Lasse Virén
Lasse Artturi Virén (born 22 July 1949) is a Finnish former long-distance runner, winner of four gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics. Virén recaptured the image of the "Flying Finns" promoted by runners like Hannes Kolehmainen, Paavo Nurmi and Ville Ritola in the 1920s. Brendan Foster
Sir Brendan Foster (born 12 January 1948) is a British former long-distance runner, athletics commentator and road race organiser. He founded the Great North Run, one of the sport's most high profile half-marathon races. As an athlete, he won the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the gold medal in the 5,000 metres at the 1974 European Championships and the 10,000 metres at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Thomas Wessinghage (born 22 February 1952 in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German former middle- and long-distance runner who won the 1982 European Championships' final over 5000 metres beating the British world-record holder David Moorcroft. Because he was already thirty at the time, and had been an international-level runner for a decade, this victory was a long-awaited one for him. He admitted that he decided to run the 5000 metres instead of the 1500 metres, because he lost to Ovett and Coe so often in the shorter distance.
