1971 West Berlin State Election
The election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 1971 took place on 14 March. The SPD experienced yet another change in leadership with the party choosing Governing Mayor Klaus Schütz as their lead candidate. The SPD in West Berlin had been led until 1966 by Willy Brandt before he had left to go to Bonn and enter politics on a national level. His successor was Heinrich Albertz, who resigned from his position amid considerable party squabbles relatively soon after taking it up. The opposition CDU meanwhile chose Peter Lorenz as there lead candidate. The SPD was able to win a fresh majority with 50.4% of votes of the vote. The CDU rose by 5.3 percentage points to 38.2% of the vote, which the FDP, former coalition partner of the SPD, increased by 1.3 percentage points to 8.4%. Willy Brandt
Willy Brandt (; born Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm; 18 December 1913 – 8 October 1992) was a German politician and statesman who was leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) from 1964 to 1987 and concurrently served as the Chancellor of Germany, chancellor of West Germany from 1969 to 1974. Heinrich Albertz
Heinrich Albertz (22 January 1915 – 18 May 1993) was a German Protestant theologian, priest and politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). He served as Governing Mayor of Berlin (West Berlin) from 1966 to 1967. Life Heinrich Albertz was born in Breslau (present-day Wrocław, Poland), in the Prussian province of Silesia, to the court preacher and consistorial councilor Hugo Albertz and his second wife Elisabeth, née Meinhof. His elder half brother was the Resistance fighter Martin Albertz. Having obtained his baccalaureate (''Abitur'') in 1933, he went on to study theology at the universities of Breslau, Halle and Berlin. Under the Nazi regime, he maintained contact to circles of the banned Social Democratic Party. The Socialist Unity Party of West Berlin (, SEW) was a communist party in West Berlin. The party was founded on 24 November 1962, when the West Berlin local organization of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) was separated from the main party. Until 1969, the party was known as the Socialist Unity Party of Germany – West Berlin (). Gerhard Danelius was the chairman of the party until 1978. In many respects, the party continued to operate as a branch of the SED even after it had formally been converted into a separate political party. Elections In Berlin
All Berlin residents who are 16 years and older, hold EU citizenship, have lived there for three months and were registered six weeks before the election are eligible to vote for the districts' assemblies. In order to be eligible to vote for the Abgeordnetenhaus von Berlin, parliament of Berlin (''Abgeordnetenhaus''), one has to be 18 years old and hold German citizenship, too. Only those under disability or in psychiatric wards are excluded. Courts of justice also have the possibility to revoke the right to vote. Elections are held about every five years.
