1970–71 FC Basel Season
The 1970–71 season was Fussball Club Basel 1893's 77th season in their existence. It was their 25th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after their promotion the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. Overview Pre-season For the sixth consecutive season Helmut Benthaus was player-manager. There were only very few changes in the squad. Bruno Michaud retired from active football after winning his third championship title. He had played 16 seasons in the Nationalliga A, 14 of these were with Basel and two with Lausanne-Sport. During his time with Basel Michaud played a total of 355 competitive games and scored 22 goals. Dieter Rüefli moved on to play for St. Gallen and Janos Konrad moved on to Vevey-Sports. Peter Wenger
Peter Wenger (10 April 1944 – 23 July 2016) was a Swiss international footballer. Career Club Wenger started his youth football with his local team in Küssnacht am Rigi. He moved to Luzern and advanced to their first team for the 1965–66 Nationalliga A season. He played as outside left and had 24 appearances, scoring three goals, but the team ended the season in second last position and suffered relegation. Wenger then signed for FC Basel and joined their first team for their 1966–67 season under head coach Helmut Benthaus. After playing in three test games, Wenger played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game in the St. Jakob Stadium on 9 October 1966 as Basel won 3–0 against Zürich. The 1971–72 European Cup was the 17th season of the European Cup, UEFA's premier club football tournament. The competition was won by Ajax, who beat Inter Milan in the final at De Kuip in Rotterdam, on 31 May 1972. It was the second consecutive win for Ajax, as well as third for Netherlands. Fussball-Club Luzern (), or simply abbreviated to FCL, is a Swiss sports club based in Lucerne (). The following is the summary of the Swiss National League in the 1969–70 football season, both Nationalliga A and Nationalliga B. This was the 73rd season of top-tier and the 72nd season of second-tier football in Switzerland. Overview The Swiss Football Association (ASF/SFV) had 28 member clubs at this time which were divided into two divisions of 14 teams each. The teams played a double round-robin to decide their table positions. Two points were awarded for a win, and one point was awarded for a draw. Neuchâtel Xamax Football Club Serrières or Neuchâtel Xamax FCS () is a Swiss football club based in Neuchâtel. It was created in 1970 through a merger between FC Cantonal, founded in 1906 and Swiss champions of 1916, and FC Xamax founded in 1912. Edoardo Manzoni
Edoardo Manzoni (* born 20 May 1947) is an svizzero retired footballer born in Italia with Italian parents. He played mainly in the position as defender, but also as midfielder in the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s. Manzoni first played for Neuchâtel Xamax. He joined FC Basel's first team on a six month loan contract during their 1970–71 season under player-manager Helmut Benthaus. After playing in seven test games, Manzoni played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 15 August 1970 as Basel drew 1–1 with Servette. During his short stay with the club, Manzoni played a total of 15 games for Basel scoring one goal. Janos Konrad (footballer)
Janos Konrad (born 28 September 1945) is a Hungarian–Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel during the 1960s. He played for Vevey Sports and Biel-Bienne in the early 1970s. He played principally in the position as a striker, but also as midfielder. Career Konrad played his youth football for FC Basel and advanced to their senior team in the 1963–64 season, but played mainly in their reserve team. He played his Nationalliga A debut on 13 September 1964 in the home game against Luzern that ended in a 2–2 draw. Just before half time in that game he scored his first goal for the club. Between the years 1963 and 1970 Konrad played a total of 39 games for Basel scoring a total of 10 goals. 18 of these games were in the Nationalliga A, two in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, five in the Cup of the Alps and 14 were friendly games.
