1970 NCAA University Division Outdoor Track And Field Championships
The 1970 NCAA University Division Outdoor Track and Field Championships were contested June 16−18 at the 48th annual NCAA-sanctioned track meet to determine the individual and team national champions of men's collegiate University Division outdoor track and field events in the United States. That year's outdoor meet was hosted by Drake University at Drake Stadium (the same location as the eponymous Drake Relays) in Des Moines, Iowa. BYU, Kansas, and Oregon finished tied atop the team standings, with 35 points each. All three were declared co-champions; it was the Cougars' first title, the Jayhawks' third, and the Ducks' fourth. John Walton Smith (born August 5, 1950) is a former American athlete, who competed in the sprints events during his career. He is best known for winning the 400 m event at the 1971 Pan American Games. He remains the world record holder for the 440 yard dash at 44.5 seconds. He set the record while winning the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 26, 1971 while running for the Southern California Striders. Mel Gray (wide Receiver)
Melvin Dean Gray (born September 29, 1948) is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver for the St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL) from 1971 to 1982. He attended college at the University of Missouri. Early life Gray attended Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, California, the football standout was also a track and field star. Willie Turner (sprinter)
Willie Turner (born October 14, 1948) is an American former sprinter. Willie resides in his home town of Yakima, Washington, where he has coached sprinting at A.C. Davis High School for many years. He is greatly loved by the local community and works part-time helping middle school children as a security guard for Wilson Middle School. Willie at one time in his illustrious carrier earned the title, for a brief period, as "Fastest Man Alive" for his efforts in the 100, 200, and 4x1 sprints. Among his many accomplishments he has won a silver medal in the 100m dash for the 1967 Pan American games. Isaac Fisher Curtis (born October 20, 1950) is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) and spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Bengals (1973–1984). Edward James "Eddie" Hart (born April 24, 1949) is an American former track and field sprinter and Olympic champion in the men's 4 × 100 m relay race at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Born in Martinez, California, Hart won the NCAA championships in 100 yd in 1970 as a University of California student. At the US Olympic Trials in 1972, both Hart and Rey Robinson repeated the world record, running the 100 m in 9.9 seconds, and were favored to win the race at the Olympic Games.
