1969 European Athletics Championships
The 1969 European Athletics Championships were the ninth European Athletics Championships which were held from 16–21 September 1969 at the Karaiskakis Stadium, Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. New at these championships were the women's 1500 metres and the women's 4×400 metres relay event. Moreover, women's 80 metres hurdles was replaced by women's 100 metres hurdles. Contemporaneous reports on the event were given in the Glasgow Herald. Former East German runner Jürgen May, who had defected, was not allowed to compete for his new country, West Germany, due to IAAF rules requiring him to live there for at least three years; he had competed for East Germany in the 1966 European Athletics Championships – Men's 1500 metres, 1966 championships. West German officials promptly withdrew their athletes from all individual events in protest, but decided to compete in the relay races as a symbolic gesture to show their respect for the Greek organisers. Valeriy Borzov
Valeriy Pylypovych Borzov (; ; born 20 October 1949) is a Soviet-Ukrainian former sprinter and politician. He is a two-time Olympian, a former president of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine, and Minister for Youth and Sports of Ukraine. In 1972, he won the 100 and 200 metres sprint events at the Olympic Games in Munich. Frank Murphy (middle Distance Runner)
Francis Murphy (21 May 1947 – 5 January 2017) was an Irish athlete, who specialised in middle-distance running and competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics and 1972 Summer Olympics. Biography Murphy was educated by the Christian Brothers at O'Connell Schools in Dublin. In 1963, he won the Irish schools 880 yards title and two years later in 1965 won the Irish schools senior over 880 yards and 1 mile. He won the first of his 13 Irish AAA titles in 1966 and represented Ireland at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Stanisław Grędziński
Stanisław Grędziński (19 October 1945 – 19 January 2022) was a Polish sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. Career Grędziński was born in Ostrzyca, Poland, and represented the club Górnik Wałbrzych. At the 1964 European Junior Championships he won silver medals in both 400 metres and 400 metres hurdles, as well as a silver medal in the medley relay where he ran the last leg. Jean-Claude Nallet (13 March 1947 – 19 August 2023) was a French sprinter that competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in the 400 m and 4 × 400 m relay and at the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 400 m hurdles and reached the final in the relay. Zenon Stanisław Nowosz (born 6 February 1944 in Warsaw) is a Polish sprinter who participated in world athletics for Poland in the late 1960s and 1970s.
