1968 NBA Playoffs
The 1968 NBA playoffs was the postseason tournament of the 1967–68 season of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The tournament concluded with the Eastern Division champion Boston Celtics defeating the Western Division champion Los Angeles Lakers, 4 games to 2 in the NBA Finals. The Celtics won their 10th NBA title, their first under player-coach Bill Russell after Red Auerbach's retirement. In the Eastern Division Finals, the Celtics became the first team in NBA history to rally from a 3–1 series deficit to win, as they knocked off the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers in seven games. In the West, the Lakers swept the San Francisco Warriors in four games. Western Division (NBA)
The Western Division was a division in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its forerunner, the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The division was created at the start of the 1946–47 BAA season, when the league was created, and was then kept as one of the divisions when BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to create the NBA on August 3, 1949. The division existed until the 1970–71 NBA season when the NBA expanded from 14 to 17 teams and realigned into the Eastern and Western conferences with two divisions each. Spectrum (arena)
The Spectrum (later known as CoreStates Spectrum, First Union Spectrum and Wachovia Spectrum) was an indoor arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The arena opened in September 1967 as part of what is now known as the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. After several expansions of its seating capacity, it accommodated 18,168 for basketball and 17,380 for ice hockey, arena football, indoor soccer, and box lacrosse. The final event at the Spectrum was a Pearl Jam Backspacer Tour, concert on October 31, 2009. The arena was demolished between November 2010 and May 2011. Wilt Chamberlain
Wilton Norman Chamberlain ( ; August21, 1936 – October12, 1999) was an American professional basketball player. Standing tall, he played Center (basketball), center in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 14 seasons. Dick Van Arsdale
Richard Albert Van Arsdale (February 22, 1943 – December 16, 2024) was an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A three-time NBA All-Star selection, his 5 was retired by the Phoenix Suns. Van Arsdale played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers, along with his identical twin brother, Tom. The New York Knicks selected Van Arsdale in the second round of the 1965 NBA draft. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and played three seasons for the Knicks before being selected by the Suns with their first pick of the 1968 NBA expansion draft. Willis Reed
Willis Reed Jr. (June 25, 1942 – March 21, 2023) was an American professional basketball player, coach, and general manager. He spent his entire ten-year pro playing career (1964–1974) with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Reed was a seven-time NBA All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection, including once on the first team in 1970, when he was named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP). The 1967–68 NBA season was the Lakers' 20th season in the NBA and eighth season in Los Angeles. This was the first season the Lakers uniforms featured what would become the signature gold and purple colors. The 1967–68 Chicago Bulls season was the second season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
