Mansfield is a market town and the administrative centre of the Mansfield District in Nottinghamshire, England. It is the largest town in the wider Mansfield Urban Area and the second largest settlement in Nottinghamshire (following the city of Nottingham). Henry III granted Mansfield the Royal Charter of a market town in 1227. The town lies in the Maun Valley, north of Nottingham. The district had a population of 110,500 at the 2021 census. Mansfield is the one local authority in Nottinghamshire with a publicly elected mayor, the Mayor of Mansfield. Mansfield in ancient times became the pre-eminent in importance amongst the towns of Sherwood Forest. Roy Chapman
Roy Clifford Chapman (18 March 1934 – 21 March 1983) was an English professional football player and manager. He was the father of former Arsenal and Leeds United striker Lee Chapman. An inside-forward, he started his career at Aston Villa in 1952 before he moved on to Lincoln City five years later to find first-team football. In 1961, he was sold to Mansfield Town, where he remained for four years, before returning to Lincoln as the club's player-manager in 1965. He gave up his management duties the following year before moving on to Port Vale in 1967. He scored 200 goals in 415 games in the Football League. In 1969, he joined Stafford Rangers via Chester. He was also given the manager job at Rangers and held this position until 1975 when he was made manager of Stockport County. David Plews Coates (born 11 April 1935 in Newcastle upon Tyne) is an English former professional footballer who played for Hull City (1956–60), Mansfield Town (1960–64) and Notts County (1964–67) where he moved on to the coaching staff on retirement as a player. He later coached at Aston Villa, Leicester City, Luton Town and Stoke City. Albert Scanlon
Albert Joseph Scanlon (10 October 1935 – 22 December 2009) was an English footballer who played as an outside left. He began his career with Manchester United and was one of the "Busby Babes" who survived the Munich air disaster of 1958. Although he sustained severe injuries, he recovered and continued to play league football for Newcastle United, Lincoln City and Mansfield Town. He then went on to play non-league football until his retirement. Early life Born in Hulme, Manchester, Scanlon was a nephew of former Manchester United winger Charlie Mitten.
